what will suit this purpose?

easy fam, i have been considering that i should get something through which i can route sounds (samples/synths mainly). I want something so that i can edit the sound in real time and would like to spend as little as possible and am willing to try some novelty pieces of kit if you think theyl do the job. So what i need is a resonant filter, amp envelopes and filter envelopes. First thought was a cheap digital synth with routable audio input or somethin any way...any ideas?

Korg monotron at $60 is about the littlest you can spend for analog, resonant, filter.

When you start talking envelopes though you are also talking something to trigger those envelopes, which usually involves a sequencer, which starts driving the price up.

The electribes work pretty good for this, and old ones are rarely over $150.

yea. Am gettin the monotron, also have been lookin at the electribe series. Thanks. Not too educated on hardware envelopes (i got here on software initially) is it possible to trigger envelopes with cv/midi or smpte or somethin? Just tryin to find out the best of my options

Its funny I was just thinking about this earlier. Alesis Ion, Micron, and Fusion can all do this. I'm sure a number of other synths can do it too.

MAM Warp 9

Another option would be an Emu Emax, which has 8 analog filters and envelopes, but you'd have to sample your sounds into it, you can't run your signals thru it live.

Don't know all the specs of all those units, but some have CV triggerable envelopes, some have MIDI triggerable envelopes, and others have envelopes that can be triggered by the incoming audio (either the source, or a sidechain).

I just wanted to add that SMPTE is definitely NOT going to help you with triggering an envelope. MIDI or CV or audio would though.

On the cheap, MIDI will be most available.
If you can find an old analog for cheap, then CV might become available.
Triggering an envelope via audio is getting into modular territory...unless you are using one of those cheapo envelope 'autowah' pedals which might actually sound pretty cool.

Just think that an envelope is a transition *over time*. That *time* has to start at some point, right? You start it when you trigger the envelope. Usually a keyboard/synth triggers the envelope with every keypress...the exception being a 'legato' mode.

cheers 4 that fam, you both done me some good, il get lookin up some of those units, yea smpte was a wild guess, all i knew was that it is used to sync gear with tape (i think) so i figured that it may be a possibility. Anyway keep em comin if anyone else got ideas, peace

I used to run stuff through my MS2000B (rack). I was doin real basic shit... but every knob twist was recordable and it has a 16 step sequencer. It has distortion and mod/delay effect also. Might be worth checkin out.

The MS-2000 is like the instant-dub machine.

As a heads up - a lot of korg gear has an audio-in capable and tempo-syncable delay line which is very handy. It gets tricky though in some of the electribes as you have to gate the signal as well.

the ms2k is pure analogue modeling genius!

totally tweekable and aplied to whatever music you see fit!

certainly not just dub.

i had the keyboard version for years its amazing if you get into it but it takes some learning.

for under 500 bucks a ms2000r rack is cool. i got one love it a go to device. check out the electrix stuff they dont make it anymore it was aimed at djs is not that expensive and has a lot of realtime controls. the man who gave you the list of filters and such is def putting you on the right track if ya got the loot.
