I need more than 128 programs:

im using the MPC2000xl as a sequencer and recording device together with external sound modules. i have them communicating perfectly i can change the external sound modules programs using the MPC but the MPC will only allow me to switch between programs 0-128 and my sound module has many more is there a way to have the MPC control more programs

No, the 2000(xl) can only send program changes between 0 and 127. There is also no "bank select" option to change the bank for the next 127 and so on.
The only chance to change the program number above 127 in your sound module might be via sysex.
First you need to know if and how your soundmodule can receive a program change via sysex. If its possible there will be a command of x bytes like this "F0 43 10 7F 00.....F7"

where the bytes in this example means:

F0: start of sysex
43: manufacturer ID (in this case Yamaha)
10: Device
7F 00: Model ID (in this case Motif ES)
.
.
.
F7 End of sysex.


Search the net for sysex commands of your modul and you will find stuff about it.
When you find it go to the StepEdit and press Insert. Change NOTE to EXCLUSIVE and change the bytes to the number of bytes the sysex command you (hopefully) found has. Hit DOIT
Now edit the bytes to the correct numbers.


I recomend to create a template sequence with a few tracks that already have this command in and save it. Its easier to load this seqence when you work with your sound module than always have to insert the sysex commend again.

Also bear in mind, as another user recently discovered, whenever you send that bank change command, any sounds you have playing might get cut off as the synth tries to switch banks.

This can really be an issue if you are working with loops.

Very few synths will let the last notes 'ring out' while switching banks...ensoniq synths come to mind.
