any tutorials on making slamming beats

I still have trouble making good sounding beats wich fit in the mix.

Somehow i dont succeed in getting that slamming bass drum, and goot hihats. Im good at programming beats in midi, but im still not able to make m sound phat.

Im sure its not my mpc4k's fault so its me.

Anyone got some info on making beat and mixing them??
Compression techniques, equing, layering, fx etc

An MPC is an MPC just has more features try the ebook by MPC tutor.

to get bigger drums, use zones, layer them,

I made a offbeat kick the otherday, the kick was made out of 4 samples

*sampled kick off vinyl (main kick sound, sarted off with this one nice kick but wasn't cutting it

*909 snare (got some filter on it, and sample startspoint edited, I basicly just wanted a little Phaah on thick

*909 Tom again with filter some tuning & saple start edits, since it was a off beat kick and there are other toms in the track it worked out nicely but I just wanted the tom ending on the kick so the startpoint was rather late

*sub bass, with some tuning, sample start & filter edits this added alot of low end

my kick sounded huge way bigger than just that one kick..

zones are the key eliment here

non quantized takes

play by ear and don't be afraid to beat out notes : you can always erase

and to kick a broken beat write in a 4/4 sense and then shift the bass and snare 1/3 or 3/16 of a beat : just select the note you want to modify and enter a number and feel how it sounds

the 4K is a beast but it can be used simply to great effect

i dont have problems with programming the sequence of the drums,, im quite good at that, i study jazz drums and can play as well, so that aint the problem.

the problem i have is with getting that snappy sound.


So layeriing is the key here i guess,,,i will experiment some on that..

Nice thread! My little drum secrets are: Kickdrum layering (one analog bassdrum and one funk/rock-feel kick),one dirty snare with super-compressed attack and hi-hat layering (one short and one with a small plate reverb amount).Straight boom bap. 8)

Yeah i layer kick drums with snares to,, i use the snare for the click at the attack of the kick. I tried to layer a kick drum with a deep 808 bass but somehow that wont work for me.
