Broken pad sensor

I found an Mpc 1000 on craigslist with a broken pad sensor. He wants $250 for it. I'm new to the MPC world and just trying to find something to start with. i guess my question is, Would this one be a safe bet or should i stay away from it? Is there any other problems that it could have that caused the sensor to break? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ps Is it easy to fix the broken pad sensor? i saw that they're about $180 but just curious on the installation.
