Share your knowledge on these two classic MPCs

How much would you be willing to pay for it though ?
I'm willing to bet not enough to make it worth anyones while to impliment.
The latest os costs $195 + shipping from Roger Linn. The vast majority of MPC owners would need to express an interest and pay at least that amount for a newer OS. I dont see this happening as some people already complain about the os costing too much.

And again, you'd probably need to loose features to make room for the new code. What would you loose ?
If nothing then you'd need to upgrade more than just the os ROMs making it even more expensive.

And why wouldnt you just use a different model of MPC that already has morwe sampling time ?
The 3k might be more for you and would probably end up being just as cost effective.

Personally I could give a 100$ for that mod, and replacing help text with my personal info.
I don't think it's a big thing for a skilled programmer to replace/add code with eprom.
That machine is so old, that's why it should be a peace of cake.
After he change the code, he just rewrite it in rom, right - that's easy cash.

Loose features, cool but how much code space new mod needs?

I wouldn't call it easy cash. I'm a programmer and I've done some coding for sega genesis and other embedded systems. It would be easier for Roger Linn cause he has the original code to modify. For anyone else it means disassembling the OS rom, trying to figure out the memory map, try to make the code fit in, etc. Nothing easy about it and I'm sure Roger Linn has better things to do. I still don't understand the difference between variable sample rate and sampling sped up then slowing down - maybe someone can explain it to me. But I might be interested in getting into mpc 60 OS hacking someday - at least the schematics are available, that makes things a little easier. I'd love to bring the pad track mutes back to the 60.

Wont happen at that price.
The help text is already gone in os 3. No room for your details. The code space was needed for some of the features in os 3, so you have to loose other things to add more.

Skilled programmers cost money and the eprom can only hold so much info.
+ You'd need Roger Linns permission to modify his existing code. If he'd allow it I'd imagine the programmer would have to pay him also, so thats another reason it isn't going to happen for $100.

Why would you think that ? What has age got to do with it ?

More than is currently available.

I think you are under estimating what is required.

I agree that Mr. Linn is occupied with more profitable things.
Yo you got good ideas fengland, I like them.
Can you extract OS from rom and try to make something?

Posting on torrent OS mod for 60 heads, so they can modernize with eprom is not bad thing.
Same thing with mpc 60 painting template; Not everybody is ready to spend big bucks for that.

Good luck modifying someone elses code and reselling it without getting sued.

.

How would the programmer get paid if your giving it away for free on a torrent site ?

He can be paid for his work.
Torrent is just idea, since everybody are sharing various things for the ww benefit.

I'm sure mansell labs, etc reverse engineered/used portions of the original os. not sure if they had Linn's permission - probably a good idea though since he's nice enough to support these ancient beasts.

Mansell and Forat were employees of Linn Electronics back in the LinnDrum & Linn 9000 days.

Of course he had permission to work on the code. No reverse engineering was needed.

Torrents are for pirates. There is no "ww benefit" in theft.

Ok, good to know. These machines are unique in still being supported. A lot of gear seems to kind of be abandoned by the companies that made them and people have been able to hack the OS without worrying to much about legal action (I'm thinking of a couple old roland synths which have 3rd party midi implementation updates, etc) I believe if you own it you should be able to hack it - I wouldn't try to make money on someone else's work.

So you know these people did or did not have permission to do so from the copyright holders or are you making assumptions ?

You can hack/modify the hardware.Just not the software.

The current Mansell Labs os for the 3k is $200. Thats double the amount the op wants to pay for an os., so he probably would not buy at that price. Neither would the people wanting torrents. That's not exactly encouraging for any prospective programmers.
You dont expect Mansell labs to work for peanuts do you ?

I'm assuming, but roland is a large company that I highly doubt would give permission.
I agree that the OP is dreaming about getting custom firmware mods for peanuts. There are plenty of other samplers with variable sample rates to be had for cheap. Part of owning vintage gear is embracing the limitations.

At the same time I see modifying firmware as similar to sampling a song to make a hiphop track - you're making something new out of it - making it your own. Whether you should then make money on it is up for debate - i'm doing music for the fun of it and that's why I got into programming too.
