Geist - a software alternative to MPC?

Hi all,

As a fellow MPC enthusiast (sadly now ex), I wanted to post here and make you guys aware of FXpansion's Geist. It's a sampling, slicing, sequencing software drum machine.

I'll be straight up here and tell you that I work for FXpansion in a support capacity, but this video you see below is done outside of company time (mainly due to the non-corporate ethics of sampling other people's work!). I'm not trying to pull one over on anyone by coming on the forum and proclaiming that this software is the best thing ever. I'm just looking for some honest feedback.

As an ex MPC user, I was pretty active on these forums a couple of years ago (I had a 2500). When the company I work for decided they were going to make a new drum machine I was pretty excited. Being a big MPC user I made sure that certain features and workflows got put in the software, and I love the results. So much so that I sold my MPC! I know - sacrilege right? It will always remain dear in my heart.

Now I know that some people prefer hardware and that's cool (hell I'm one of them a lot of the time!) but I think Geist is pretty special so I made this video to show the MPC workflow and how that works in Geist. The video was shot in one take. I only did minor cosmetic edits so what you see in this video is a 10 minute beatmaking session in Geist, no more. I'd be interested to know what you guys think.

I had a VST, can't for the life of me remember it's name, about 8 years ago which pretty much did this. By a small company, i'll have to dig out the DVD it's on. i used to use it when i had no MPC

That beat is great.

Just goes to show it aint always the tools.

To me, the workflow, while obviously inspired by an mpc, looks nowhere near as close. Still, I imagine it works for cats less crusty than myself, and props on making such an in depth video.

It looks like a nice in-between area between something like an old mpc and something new like maschine or ableton.

Geist is a german word and means : intellect, ghost, spirit, esprit, psyche

As for Geist, I remembering demo'ing this when it first came out. I didn't have much time to spend with it but they did get a lot right. I didn't like the effects. I remember being turned off because I thought it couldn't preview slices from a controller without having to commit, like I can on my MPC or Maschine, but was later shown how to do it by someone over at FXpansion. I may just have to demo again, this time around during a less hectic time. Nice video.
