Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

So I didn't have a job which = no ectra $. But after months of saving I finally got enough together to throw down for a SCSI CF from SCSI for samplers. Well guess what? They don't have any more and they said they prolly won't get anymore.

I wanted the SCSI one b/c

1) I didn't want to upgrade my OS to 1.20, I am happy with 1.14

2) The massive storage space

But I guess the biggest reason was the fact that I pulled a GENIUS move and threw away the disk drive for the 2KXL when I put in a zip drive that is now non functional.

So here are my questions if you don't mind taking any time it would be appreciated.

1) Since I am using an outboard ZIP250, if I get OS 1.20 and load it on, will it be able to then boot correctly from the outboard ZIP? I had issues with this when upgrading to 1.14 a while ago after the internal ZIP broke. I had to use my buddies internal zip linked to my MPC to get the OS to take from the ZIP disk. It didn't seem to recognize my external drive.

2) In you guys' opinions, what is the best option?

I don't want to keep throwing down for zip disks that eventually corrupt and my ZIP drives are on their last legs.

Thanks for the time!

1: No reason for not upgrading. Far as I remember (sold my 2000xl) there is not much difference.
2: I think you need to upgrade in order to use a cf reader/writer
3: mpc-stuff.com might have one. I bought mine there, 125$ once. Got it sent as a gift which saved me 25% extra tax from my greedy government...

in my opinion a cf reader is the best. You can transfer sounds with it from a computer (although you can do this with the dinosaur zip drive too)

biggest reason is if you have things you`d like to keep, then google click of death, which can occur to your zip drive..

Thanks guys!

I think I am gonna have to bite the bullet and order a new floppy drive from MPCstuff and upgrade to 1.20.

I would love to get the SCSI CF, but it is really pricey and I am silly broke

EDIT

Gonna order this. Found a link from a thread here. Anyone see any problems?

buy this one... cables fit perfectly if you had a floppy before... (don´t know about zip)... can read one GB smart cards only, but thats "1GB" (more than enough. Need to drill holes to attach it to the MPC case, and buy metal screws... Otherwise i´ve had mine for 6 mothts....no problem...

Unfortunately I am not in Europe. I think it would run near 60$ for me to order that. However it looks the same as :

http://www.provantage.com/addonics-adid ... DDO18R.htm

One of which I am gonna get. I have seen the posts about getting 3 for 5$ on ebay but don't have an ebay or paypal anymore so...

Hopefully one of those works. I guess I am gonna go with the Addonics site one first and see what happens. Hopefully they have a nice return policy just in case.

word

So can somebody please confirm if I understand this correctly; if you are using an external SCSI card reader then you do not necessarily have to ungrade to 1.20 (OS 1.14 can work with an external SCSI card reader)? FYI I am using a MPC 2000XL.

Did it work?

That Addonics CF adapter will work fine with the MPC2000XL but finding a compatible CF card can sometimes be tricky. I've found that Kingston, Sandisk and Lexar CF cards will generally all work okay.

Remember that if you have either a screwed-up IDE cable or an incompatible CF card inserted into the IDE/ATAPI CF card reader and you power on your MPC, you'll get a confusing message that says "No floppy drive found". It's confusing since you are not trying to use the floppy drive at all but instead are trying to use the IDE/ATAPI connection. In this case, what happens is that when the MPC2000XL doesn't see a drive or compatible CF card in the IDE/ATAPI connection, it reverts back to trying to access the floppy drive connection and then, since there is no floppy drive connected, you get that message. It's confusing but it also makes sense when you think about it.

If anyone needs help with their IDE/ATAPI CF adapter drive installation, you can contact me via PM and I'll be glad to try to help you.
