Direct Record Question

i searched the forum and looked at the video on youtube but still cant get it right. how do i direct record with out other sounds bleeding in. after i direct record i press the play button and i hear not only the sound i just played but the entire sequence. i also tried to direct record using midi with my eps just like he does in the youtube video but i didn't work right. i tried to start with some drums but every time i recorded, the click would be recorded to. when i press play to see what i recorded i hear the kick drum along with the click(metronome) how do i get it to work like the guy did in the video. i follow what he does but don't get his results.

just mute all the other tracks you don't want to record... i thought that would be logical...
