Tree fiddy about 2 months ago with box and manuals and extra card. The craigslist ad said there was a power adapter, but I guess it was the dude's little bro that came and met up with me, so he probably didn't think to look for the adapter when he grabbed the box.

I paid for a used one 300 euro (which means approx 410 $), it came with a 2GB-Flash card, hooked up with 512MB ram.

Which is the maximum ammount of RAM your 500 can handle. 512MB makes no sense and he will never be able to use it all.

Yeah, I was about to point that out. The 500 can only read 128 MB of RAM and the 5000, 256MB of RAM. The MV is the only hardware I know that can use 512MB of RAM.

Some people love to pretend what they don't got. Last one I heard was that the 500 has a footswitch.

It just dropped and I bought it for E600, sold it half year later for 300

Then I bought a second hands for a project one and a half year ago for E220, and sold it last month for E270. Did a ram upgrade though.

Got mine 2nd hand off a friend, £150 without any upgrades, bought the ram upgrade for like £4 and a 4gb memory card for £5... sold my PS3 to acquire it and havent looked back lol.

I ordered mine used from Musician's Friend a little over a year ago for around $540. If I remember correctly, I ended up grabbing the RAM card from a distributor on Amazon for close to $140. It wasn't until I was recently seriously looking into getting rid of my 500 that I started to figure out how tough they are to sell for a decent price.

My first thought was to hit up a bunch of kids I know on Facebook that post stuff all the time about producing/recording hip-hop. Let me back up and say--my 500 is all decked out with the RAM expansion, purple glow pads with Pad Corx, and faceplate skin (from StyleFlip). Plus I was going to include True Essence (the DJ Premier drum pack from MPC-Samples) and a bunch of other stuff on the memory card - plus everything that came with the original package (including the stock pads). Everybody was really interested - until I said I was asking for $375. Might I add, that still seems like a pretty good deal to me - considering the $$$ I put into the machine. Alas, times are tough so it's understandable that people don't have all kinds of money laying around to throw at a piece of hand-me-down gear right now.

Next I figured maybe I'd get a good price for it on eBay or something like that. No such luck. I've been watching, and it seems like the only MPC500s that are even getting bids, for the most part, are going for under $300--often times with the RAM expansion already installed! Even Top Sellers asking for $599 don't seem to be getting any bids. I noticed that the 500s were going for a little more on Craigslist in my area - but there were actually a bunch of them for sale on there--and they seemed like they had really been sitting (not selling) for quite some time.

I just decided to stick with the 500 - until either a] Akai pulls their heads out of their you-know-whats OR b] I decide to finally make the switch over to a NI Maschine (which I've been seriously considering as of late)...

THE MORAL OF THE STORY? If you're thinking about buying a 500 - really look into it first!!! Don't be fooled by the price tag. You get what you pay for, for sure. It's a great piece of gear for what it is - but it really does have it's limitations--which Akai tries to mask with the machine's portability (I've rarely used mine outside of my room). Keep in mind, you have to buy RAM right off the bat to really use the thing--which is somewhat deceptive and a scheme to squeeze money out of consumers (as far as I'm concerned). Not only that, it's also been all but abandoned by Akai. In other words, there are NO updates of the buggy OS coming soon...or at all...EVER. You might be better off just shelling out a little more cash and grabbing a used MPC1000 from the internet or something like that.

The 500 seems to have been nothing more that a demo of a real MPC. It's pretty awesome until you begin to outgrow the features - and become frustrated with bass-ackwards workflow. Then you inevitably buy something more expensive. Akai hopes you buy from them.

I am definitely going to be weary about purchasing any other gear from Akai.

You can get a brand new mpc500 pritty cheap here in the uk if you know were to look.

the uk is a wierd place and street prices dither vastly depending on were you are in the uk

there some (a lot of) very upper class parts of this country were you can expect to pay 10 times more then you would in our very very very low class areas (which are basicly what americans would call ghettos, the uk goverment would rather people dont know about these places).
belive it or not the really really f'd up parts of the uk are pritty dangerous and outsiders wondering around these areas will more then lighty get robbed at the least but killings are not uncommon.
if your willing to risk it or are unfortinet enouf to live in one of these areas, you can get pritty much anything for a fraction of the price you would pay in a 'normal' part of the uk
infact i know a shop in croyden, south london, were they have an mpc2000xl in perfect working order for £150 (cosmeticly the shell was a little scratched but still it worked just fine), several new mpc500s for £200 an mpc3000 for £450 2 asr10s both goin for £180 the lists goes on and on they even sell brand new mac book pros in the store nest door for £300 less then the highstreet stores only problem is you gotta walk fru one mad bit of croyden to get there n down more then a few alleys.
