Newer samplers are Just so damn feature rich. It took me four years to feel like I had completely mastered my 2000. I couldnt imagine startin out on the more advanced ones. My first week with the MP... I just stared at it. Thinkin wtf did I spend $1200 on this big ass paper weight.

well i've been making beats since i was 16 (19 now) on fruity loops so i know the basics of making a beat as well as some minor chops. it was pretty stupid of me to think i should be putting out amazing beats within weeks, ill continue to get better. i really know what you mean when u say i should be able to operate my mpc blindfolded as i continue to learn it, then ill be focusing on my sound rather than if im filtering them all exactly or applying the right effects.

thanks guys! maybe continue to post when u got in the groove for other newbies

lol yea i was messing with that for a while but i found it to be a really dirty bass. of course, some samples are just screaming to be filtered. im a huge fan of the whole Boot Camp Clik era and most of their beats were the simple drums, sample, filtered sample. simple but wicked

True, but I find it quite hard to get filtered basses like Da Beatminerz... If you listen to songs like Wrektime or Wrekonize, they got a perfect filtered bass sound.
When I try to do this with my MPC 2000 it sounds very muddy... Maybe it's the S950 filter I don't know

a good few months of work... started making beats at 17, turning 22 next month and im still not happy with my work, i still feel like im learning.

there are no limits to music, you can do w/e you want, but it does take time and dedication. (also money)

QFT

I've been doing this for roughly 6 years, and I can't stand listening to anything I make for more than a week. I like to think it's what keeps me driven. If I were ever satisfied with the music I make, then I probably wouldn't have a reason to make it anymore.

QFT x2

i hear you on that! i just need to start getting the groove of this thing, i feel like i hear a crazy sample and i wanna mess with it. i then chop it up in the mpc and slowly but surely i start losing focus on what i wanted to start with, because im just trying to chop the samples properly.

do you guys chop samples a certain way like equally so you can play it smoothly, or on drums n snares, or on certain strings. i know its all about the music but i just find myself thinking WAY too much about that kinda stuff and lose touch with the soulful music part, and it just becomes chop chop chop and once its laid out im not too happy because i spent so much damn time chopping

It's exactly the same for me, most of the time I feel like I found the best sample ever, and after 1 or 2 hours of work it's just an average beat ???

Most of the time, if I only chop and if there is no straight loop, I will chop on bars or half bars etc.
But if there is a straight loop, I will chop some elements randomly, like just one note of sax or a little riff that I like and see if it fit.

i know what you mean, im gonna try doing it a little different today. im gonna just start with some drums i really like, and try to listen in for a good bass in the sample, filter it and just lay it out like the old school dudes. then ill find some strings and stuff and slowly build from there..i know for a fact that nothing gets my head banging more than some good old drums and a funky bassline, and the strings/other noises are just icing on the cake
