hi everybody, i plan to buy some equipment to record my 8 out's of the mpc3000 into a computer for mixing but i have a question.

is it necessary to take an interface with 8 preamps or the out's of the mpc are loud enough to go to -14 dbfs (the ideal recording level in 24 bit) ?

You dont need pre amps. The outs on the MPC's are fine.

What he said ^^^

The MPC3000 outputs are line level which is fine for tracking purposes.

You could possibly use a little input gain on your interface to boost the levels slightly.

so, i don't need no preamp interfaces like the presonus digimax fs ? juste an interface with 8 inputs ?

just use the stereo outs
they're hotter than the MIDI outs anyway and you'll end up losing some of the oomph in your kicks and bass
that's why Timbaland only tracks out with stereo outs, its an old studio trick

Are you tripping or what ?
MIDI is not audio.

dammit of course they're not audio, I meant individual outs instead of MIDI
thanks for catching that for me LOL

wow cuz.. so many wrong things in this ... no diss tho

but timbaland dont even use a 3k.. + the midi thing, which, i believe u, is an isolated lack of attention...

I didn't say he uses a 3k, I just said he said it
when he and Danja were working together, he used a 4k and he said Timbaland told him to track out with the stereo outs because they're hotter than the indie outs
also, Young Guru has said many times in interviews that the older MPCs especially have hotter stereo outs than indie outs and that he hardly ever used indie outs to track because you lose some of the MPC thump from the lower end of the kicks in the translation
the same holds true with the ASR 1o, which Timbaland does use
producers sometimes have a lot of gear so you don't really know what they're using, and he's never stopped using the ASR even when he was all about that Open Labs Miko he got on when they came out
the stereo outs thing isn't a new revelation; I've been working in studios in some capacity for 15 years, mostly with 6os and 3ooos, and that's been a trade secret for even longer than that

^ dang u backin knolwedge

i stand corrected. u know ur shit.

i never contradicted the stereo out thing tho... i personally use them because i dont have an 8 input interface yet... but yeah... forat does that output boost on the 3k or 60s....

and rodney jerkins said in an interview that the boosted outs were his way of getting a fat sound..

i still didnt use my 8 outs.. are they THAT soft?

LOL no offense taken, homie
I'm sorry if what I was saying wasn't clear
you know, I don't think I've ever used them myself
but I believe it's not really that they're soft, its just that the stereo outs are much better
but I guess if you have the boost on them it doesn't matter, I've never been able to justify the price to get it done but I definitely see the need for it
By Ldizzy Fri Mar 18, 2011 10:58 pm
forat told me i could live without it... it would just boost it and that id better invest in some quality samples/engineering...

i guess the best would be to use quality preamps and shit...

guess he was right, but the price for 8 indiv preamps is nowhere near that tweak..

i still think i could use it... id luv to track out 8 outs at once...

I'd be curious to see how it works out
if you decide to do it, perhaps you could post a before/after example of how it sounds
but Forat seems like a standup guy tho, most people wouldn't tell you something they sold isn't necessary like that LOL

Ok so Individual outs VS the Stereo L/R Outs. The MAIN outs in the MPC3000 is a little bit of a different circuit (but only by a little bit) as the the Main Outs have an extra OP-Amp in the signal chain (4 actually, the individuals have 3) plus the volume pot. So thats all to say the stereo summing on the main outs is different than the individual 8 out's and that is why it sounds "better" or louder VS the 8-outs...

I have never seen what Bruce does to boost the individual outputs but it's possible to swap the main Op-Amp's with something with more headroom. But thats a guess...
