Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

I always thought it`s the same engine but i read somewhere that the classic sounds better

Sound is the same, swing is the same.
People are going to believe what they want. I doubt anyone could tell the difference in a blind test.

Does anyone have a classic and an xl we could test this?

Editorial note: some of the worst, most false rumors about MPCs get started around here. Did you know in the 1k forum people are saying that sticking a piece of foil under your pad sensors 'increases sensitivity'?...Sure it does, cause it's an electrical short.

I recently just got an 2000XL, and I still have my 2000 classic. Personally, I like the little things on the XL better, although I only played with my XL for a few hours cause I had to repair it before I could use it to its full capabilities.

The XL allows you to switch from Drum to MIDI while your sequence is playing, so in my opinion, its better for playing live and making a sequence on the fly. The XL also lets you chop into zones, which is handy, but I'm not sold on it yet.

Another plus I have found with the XL is that I can start it up in 2 seconds and not have to wait for my lousy zip drive to load. The boot files are on board, rather than on disk with the classic.

Im sure I will find more pros and cons in the next few weeks...I literally just got my XL working last night, and played with it for 2 hrs.

I agree, but I just wish that there is a way to improve the feel of jog wheel on XL...
2000 Classic's jog wheel is very nice...

There is NO swing difference between any of the MPC lines out there

how many different mpc have you got?
believe it or not, there IS a swing difference between the varios models. i had the whole series (expect the 2000 classic)
from 500, 1k, 2,5k, 3k, 60 mk2, 4k, 5k, to the 2kxl.
why do you think is the REASON and ABLETON swing adapted from the mpc60?

Roger Linn said in an interview posted here in the forum (don't remember the title of that topic) that there is no difference in the swing function in the various different models

marketing.

+100000000000000000

I made some songs on a MPC-60 which I loaded up in my XL the other day and I can't tell any difference

If anything the timing on the 60 is going to suck more cos the slow CPU, as stated by Linn himself....what the 60 does have is bags of charm, and it feels great to use....what a lot of people hear imo is just in their head or want to hear from what they read and to be honest it's understandable.

Sound wise they are different but not that that different as the marketing says imo re. MPC-60 12 bit vs 2000xl or a 3200xl

this is true, but there IS a difference in the way the hardware handles the functions, and this is what creates the differences people notice
I'd never say there's not a bunch of crap out there and rumors regarding the subject, but I've gone between MPCs one right after another and tried to use the same swing on both, but there were differences
you can certainly make it almost impossible to tell which one you're using when you're making music, but to say there aren't any differences altogether is overstating things a bit

I agree there could be subtle, unstated differences that might explain some 'differences' between models (I'm starting to think that 'best st' feature is the reasoning for the 3000's 'tight timing'....just a software focus on sample attack, unrelated to sequencer).

Point is, we are talking about the 2000 and the 2000xl. I think it's safe to say, there is no difference in sound, and no difference in swing between these two.

Still looking for someone with both models to record a file for us...I would be glad to set this up and provide reference file, it shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

The classic lacks the Slice function and Timestretch of the 2000xl. Swing is the same. I think the classic sounds a little different than the xl but two sounds played side by side I probably couldn't tell.

classic has a better low-end output. i was very surprised when i played the same beat from each one, side by side. But the xl has a waaaaayyy better workflow...track mute screen, etc. you have to layer sounds moreso on the xl....but the workflow is unparalleled in my view
