Reverb on snares

I'm a big fan of snares with a lot of reverb, but I don't really manage to get the kinds of sounds I want. Here are a few examples of the sounds I like:

Do you have tips on how to set the reverb to achieve that kind of sound? I have the impression that it works quite well with 80's snares(like the TR909 or the DMX), but my reverb settings seem like they're not really good

Well those first two are sampled from the same break that already had reverb. The only advice I can really give you is keep tweaking the settings. The reverb in the mpc500 really sucks so I avoid using that when I can, lots of times I will toss te snare in ableton and use that reverb.

im on a mobile so cant watch vids but in the 80's gated reverbs were very popular so check them out. I'm a bit of a reverb freak but ive learned not to use as much on snares as i used to as heavy use of reverb can subtract from the punch of a snares attack at times imo, hope ive helped.

Yes I know it was the Orange Krush break for Kanye, but I wasn't sure for Doom. I don't have reverb in my MPC so I'm using VST's

If you're not happy with your results, there are two possible issues. Your reverb itself or your skills. One problem can be solved with money, the other takes time and effort.

At the end of the day, its all about hearing what you like and liking what you hear, so as always, my advice is to learn the 'rules' and then break them as you see fit.

For the moment I use Kjaerhus classic reverb and variety of sound epicverb. Both are free, but I heard they are pretty good...

also try (parallel) compressing your snare, so the 'tail' comes out more

Don't think this has as much to do with reverb as it does the sound of the snare.

The first two examples can be achieved by layering white or pink noise on the snare.

You can do this effectively by creating another channel within your DAW, setting up a tone generator VST, setting it on white/pink noise, adjusting the frequency to taste. To have the noise play with the snare, set up a gate and have it side chained to the snare channel. Adjust thershold and release values to taste.

Thanks I will try this. I actually got very close results with a 909 snare so i guess the sample is really important.

Depends on how you route it. If you're in a DAW and you 'send' the snare to a reverb aux track via bus instead of applying the reverb directly to the snares audio track, then the actual snare will be completely unaffected.

first of all, the reverbs plug-ins sucks, and those of mpcs too, and of most keyboards.

Yamaha's are good though and Ensoniq too.

Get yourself a nice outboard reverb if you want quality and space in your mix, and if you want your snare to still stand out, and not get washed up.

second like its been said, those sound like they been gated, probably because there was verb in the sample or in one of the layered sample, and then been played with a cut in the sampler.

also, since they sound bit reduced, it also change the way the reverb sound. there is so many variables that's its hard to answer you str8forwardly.

the reverb is gated. You can use a free VST called golden gate, that is crazy. Thing is, I hardly use reverbs on drum that much any more.

in order to make hits, or have people want to buy your tracks, most of the time, people don't care for reverb'd drum sounds.

BUt I Do still love them, When I mix down album cuts, I use them every so often.

I got custom kits with snares (minus the gate and reverb and with).
