I use my MPC2500 for loads of genres. It's the heart of my setup, sequencing 3 analogue synths (SH09, MS20, X0XB0X), 2 digital synths (DX9, FZ-1), 3 drum machines (TR808, TR606, TR727). It's my rock! It's a solid sequencing and sampling machine. No need to question it for the sake of hip hop.

out of interest - i take it you still use the internal sequencers of the drum machines and x0xb0x?

Yeah. All clocked from the mpc 95% of the time through a Kenton Pro 4 and sync24. Sometimes I clock the mpc from my Roland MC4 or the TR808 (with a sync24->midi box) and then clock the other machines through the mpc -> Kenton. Ofc I can also free up a sync24 cable by syncing the x0xb0x with midi. Also, you can sync the x0xb0x with midi and have it fire out sync24 at the same time. Another thing I do sometimes is fire off the step trigger in my Roland CSQ100 with a trigger from my 808 or the mpc.
I don't have any midi retro-fits and don't intend to.
