I think I got hosed.

I bought a mpc500 on ebay and the power supply doesn't work. When it comes on it either says memory problem check memory or, inst. gen. and pc followed by some numbers. CPU Addr (read) PC (884ec3d8) what does this mean?

you can buy replaceable power cables and the memory problem i dont know, maybe you need to update to the 1.31 OS (which i believe is the latest OS) and then upgrade your memory and make sure you get the right chip

does your mpc already have a memory chip installed? take the bottom piece off and check. if the chip isnt compatible, that maybe where your problem lies.

ur mpc500 is not broke brother

this is a fault that eventually u get in every mpc500 (if ram is installed) the fault is more then lightly the ram holder its self and not the ram, i recently posted a post on this.

the ram holders are flimsy and louse there grip on the ram with time, this is a bog standard mpc500 fault, repeadly shakking ur 500 speeds up the process of fukkin the ram holder (like carring ur mpc500 in a rucksack or bag or sending it fru the post)
but it will just happen sooner or later anyway.


to fix this either

open the back of ur mpc and remove the ram (if u do this the mpc500 will use the bulit in ram, which give less sample time but its pobably the best way to go as you avoid the inevitable ram read errors)

or

take the ram out then put it back in perfectly alliend and glue it to the ram holder (only glue the arms of the ram holder to the ram and do not get glue on any of the rams curcuitry), but even if you do this repeated shaking or movment or even stiking of pads will probably break the bond of the glue at some point(no matter what glue you use i'd imagine kuz that certant type of plastic the ram holders made of jus dose not seem to bond very well to the material the rams board is made of) and ovcouse if you break the bond your allowing the ram to slightly move in the ram holder again (which has become louse with time) allowing the ram to slightly misalline, breaking the comnnection between ur ram and ur mpc not allowing the mpc to read the ram (hence the read error).

or

(untested method of keeping the ram in a aging/louse ram holder) put a tight but not to tight rubber band around the ram holder arms and ram, locking the ram into the holder tightly (not shure if the rubber will fuk with the ram if you do this? as rubber is know for not conducting electricity and theere are expossed electronic parts on the part of the ram you would have to put the band around.

Why, do I keep reading this? I've had my 500 for over a year. I bought it used. It gets constant use (I only play live - finger drumming or whatever). Plus, I truly beat the demons out of those pads. I've never knocked my RAM card loose or anything like that. Furthermore, it fits in there perfectly. I'd doubt if it even shakes when I play.

Did you purchase your MP used? Perhaps a previous owner damaged that part when installing/uninstalling RAM at some point. Maybe that's even why it was sold. I could see how that part could be damaged during installation and what-not. I also think if you're just really careful whenever you mess with your RAM card - you can avoid this problem all together.

I don't even know if I would suggest putting glue or anything in there either. You should really be careful even just handling your RAM card with out taking the proper measures (antistatic wrist strap/ground bracelet).

I mean - I suppose I could justify attaching a little foam or something over the batteries to help with that problem. (I have experienced problems with this, although it's really not a deal-breaking issue or anything.)

It's up to you though. If you don't have a warranty or anything to worry about voiding - go nuts.

OH YEAH! and maybe you shouldn't be carrying your MPC all-over town in a "rucksack or bag" either. You can buy protective cases made specifically for the MPC 500. I've even heard that some cheap laptop cases fit the 500 perfectly.
