what if we all run some easy sound comparison test
on here that everyone with MPC60/3000/2000/2000XL/4000/1000/25000
samples the same "clean" sample loop
into their MPC's and posts on here
to compare the sound coloration, etc?
whould that be possible?

This idea has been thrown out there before. Problem is everyone has different sound cards which introduce yet another A/D stage of variable...

its about quality of sound...

what you put in to the xl, you get out.

the 1000 digitizes the **** out of the sound. its harsh, ringy, and when you knock it down, you end up with something sounding like it was produced on frootyloops anyway.

the 1000 does not represent the lows well whatsoever, i dont care what anyone says

the filters, although various, do not do justice to the sound like the xl one band does.

you do have to work a little more on the xl, and yes, it should eventually be paired wiht a minimum of an 8 track mixing board... but the 1000, just does not sound accurate to me ( but i make hip hop )

So u do most of your production work on 2kXl?
so what are you using the 1K for.. or you use them both at the same time... whats your workflow?
could u please post same loop sampled straight into 2KXL and 1000 on here - would be great to hear .. as i know noone around with older MPC's to compare?

I agree, but as some may have 2 machines one vintage and one modern
or even three- they would be best Sound test comparison
professors ;)
anyone?

Do it man! We will make sure Lamp puts it sticky ;) You have so many great equipment you really should do a sound test to each one of them!

I listened to my old 2k next to a buddies 1k and the 2k sounded better to me. The 1k sounded like I just recorded a sample dry into a daw. Just very harsh highs and weak low end compared. The 2k had more warmth and was a little bit muddy. The 2k also had a little bit more punch. I have a 1k now and I like the features, but the sound sucks. You can make the 1k sound alot better if you process the sample before hand in a daw and with alot of other shit before it reaches the 1k, but it still doesn't come out sounding like a 2k at all. That's just my .02.

So here's my opinion:

If you want more features(jj os), a faster machine, don't care about the more transparent digital type sound and don't want to worry about finding parts right now, then the 1k is a good choice. It doesn't feel like it's built aswell, but imo also doesn't feel cheap.

If you want less features, a slower machine, a warmer or colored sound, want to mess with scsi drives, want to eventually have to hunt for replacement parts and want a better built machine, then the 2k/xl is a good choice for you.

I dig my 1k with JJOS2XL , and even like the sound( never had other MPC's though)
workflow is great, machine is fast and got 125mb memory - to much to mess with;)

but still look for maybe a little portable audio hardware device to put in the sampling/playback chain to fatten or bitcrash sound before it enters or lives MPC?

got huuge rackmount 4 channel tube preamp - but that's to big and heavy to walk or travel with...

any ideas for a "pocket" sound wamers/lo-fi FX box to carry in MPC bag?

I have an sp-303, it sounds good and has some good fx. When you sample into the sp-303 first and then resample into the 1k it sounds alot better than just sampling straight into the 1k imo.

I have to say this................Im loving the sound of the 2kxl.Now i like it better than my 4000.ahem!!!There truly is a sweet sound to this machine.I think fast track describes it well.It belongs to the classic machine selection.I mean ive had like tons of samplers and Now back to this lil doorstop powerhouse. And i can do the rest of the freakin in computer. Its sounding a lot smaller than the 4k tho.But i quite like that for now.ill use both.........btw-(2kxl)why do notes cut off when playing long samples in a sequence?

sold my 1K for a 2KXL. Just cause I like the whole build of the 2KXL, felt like a 1K was like a damn Tonka truck and the 2KXL was a Semi. Love 'em both, one has advantages over the other. I like the 2KXL more cause it forces you to be more creative..you're not given effects (unless you've got the optional effects card; which i don't have), you're given less sample time..therefore you've got to be more precise about what you want to chop, it's got a tilt screen, a dope interface. and yea, i plead guilty to this..most of my influences use the 2KXL.
