hello everybody. i don't own the 5k (former 2kxl, 4k and actual 1k jjos2xl user) but i'm vaguely thinkin' bout gettin' one in the near future.
so, i downloaded the 5k OS2 manual and read a good part of it.
what i need to know is some additional info re: next seq \ next bar function.

in jjos2xl if you select IMMEDIATELY PLAY as behaviour for NEXT SEQ , whenever you select the new sequence the mpc jumps to it in what can be called a "legato mode" (term borrowed from ableton live)

i.e.: you press seq2 when you are at 01:02:01 of seq1 , the sequencer will jump to the same exact position of seq 2 , so you can rearrange your sequences in a very musical way.

Is this the same behaviour in the 5k when you use the NEXT BAR? i know you can choose the jump quantization, but what's not clear in the manual is whether the new sequence will be played from its start or from the corresponding location of the previous sequence.

hope i've been clear enough, i know it sounds a bit twisted :)

thanks in advance for every information u can supply.

download the manual from AKAIPRO.com

I believe what you want is possible using the 'SUDDEN' button :

SUDDEN Button

Normally, the MPC5000 will switch to the next sequence after it plays the current sequence to the end.
However, you can also switch to the next sequence before the MPC5000 finishes playing back the current sequence by
pressing the [F4] (SUDDEN) button.
It is useful for the live performance, where you need to switch to the next phrase at a certain cue.
01. Select the next sequence with the pads, and press the [F4] (SUDDEN) button.
The MPC5000 will switch to the next sequence at the point the button is pressed.
Tip: If you press the pad while holding the [F4] (SUDDEN) button, the MPC5000 will switch to the next sequence at the
point the pad is hit.

thanks for the answer. me too i downloaded the manual and read all that part. what is not well explained is if on the 5k the SUDDEN button works as in all previous mpc's (i mean, when you press it you SUDDENLY jump to the selected sequence but AT THE START , bar 1) or if it jumps to the same position on next seq (as in jj's os2xl when you select IMMEDIATELY PLAY). this is a very focal point for my way to perform a liveset.

given that you say you downloaded the manual (just like me) i assume you don't own a 5k. i find very strange that no actual 5k user is able or willing to reply to this peculiar question.

thanks again anyway!

So far when using Songmode or the Next Seq. button it jumps to the first beat of the sequence no matter what I tried icm with the Transport buttons.

I guess what you want is a JJOS exclusive.

i think you didn't get the question. i surely don't get your answer.

He's saying make seq variations that start at different points and switch accordingly to the seq that has the desired start point.

What he means is change the startpoints of the sequence copies. Personally I prefere this method even in life situations.

I really don't see the point in the JJOS function you are talking about for live situations or on the fly performing. Maybe you can explain it to me?

yes.
example:

seq1 (16 bars) seq2 (16 bars)

i have two similar sounding sequences but with lots of variations between them (rhytm, melody, whatever)
with the IMMEDIATELY PLAY function implemented by jj you can switch between sequences at any point and never break the musical continuity, hence you can remix your sequences on the fly without ever loosing groove or musicality.

that is possible because if i switch when on 04.03.01 on seq1 , seq2 will start from that exact point, and close the musical phrase like it was a unique sequence. hope my english is not too bad.
tell me if it is clear.

This function is implemented the very same way in ableton live when you enable the legato mode on the launch properties of a clip.

if instead i have the next seq jump quantized but not legato, i will have no timing problem but i cannot jump from whatever point of a sequence because the next will play from his start, hence breaking the musical flow (particularly hostile on melodic parts)

Thats a pretty nice feature. I would like to use that for writing arrangements.

But please do tell how it works in Ableton. Do you have all the tracks set to legato? Or does it only apply to one track with multiple clips?
