I was actually thinking about the roland sp303 or sp404

Its not old, but its got a lofi effect and some other cheapp effects that are good for drums. Theres alot of dudes here that use it. I dont own one but ive read millions of posts on this...........

What instruments do you want the grimey feel for? just for the drums?

here are some other things that may help your choice.

Think about data compatibility. I think the Akai would be easier to use because you could just save the samples, then swap them to the 1000 with a computer as opposed to having to run a cord and potentially add unwanted noise. if you get like a emu, i think you may have to convert the samples (im not sure if it saves wav) just something to consider.

With something newer like the sp404, you get a cf card.

Think about midi use vs resampling. I dont think all your options would have the greatest workflow if you plan on going the midi route. But if you dont mind resampling unit to unit then you probably could go either way.

something like the s950 has that sine wav. Plus consider if you want keymapping some have it some dont. (I thought the s950 did?)

consider extra bonuses. Even though the mpc is your main piece, something like the sp404 or sp1200 or asr would be cool because you could use them standalone (because they have sequencers) just to change things up.

the sp 1200 is king of grime for one. also the supply is low and demand is high.

take the akai mpc 60 for example, 20,000 of them where produced. there are only 5000 black face sp1200 units made and 10,000 sp1200 grey units

go to emulatorarchive.com and read more about the sp

wha another sampler?

Get yourself a Sherman Filterbank or a Jomox M-Resonator. Both are filters and analogue, the Filterbank is almost a synth without oscillators. Run your samples through it and you´re in grime heaven.

there are a lot of older synths with audio input, yo don´t have to use the filters, aometimes it´s enought to drive the input hot through them.

.. and yes, i have all the recommendations used by myself :)

I have to second the ZOOM. For "grime", low-rate sampling, effects mangling, detuning effects, the Zoom ST-224 is the FMR RNC* of samplers.

To do better than the Zoom, you need at least an Emax which is 3 to 4 times the price and old as the hills. Even an S950 won't do what the Zoom does. The SP1200 is amazing gear but the Zoom is close and about 1/12th the price.

The Roland Sp303 is a similar unit.. and I imagine it is very similar to the Zoom (some say better) in sound mangling etc... I've just not used it myself (and that seems to be a sticking point in this thread...)

*FMR Really Nice Compressor : best compression for a tenth of the price.

you can hear an all Zoom sampletrack song @ http://www.myspace.com/adruthemisphit second track down, that's my man and I made the first beat on a 60 only[/quote]

Is the song So Many Questions te song you we're talking about in that thread?

4 years old post lol ;)

song is very cool no matter what the outcome.

Zoom sample track is pretty grimey alright. But it misses the hi fi lo fi sound of old imo(btw-havent listened to the track above yet  ).I cant imagine producing a whole track using this like people do on the 1200 and 950 ect(pro level).Want a tip.Roland js30 has a very honest clear crunch to it that i never tired of.Expanded version recomended.Ensoniq eps is gold of course........

electric dragon wrote:sometimes i will just use the MPC1000 itself, run the sample through the bitcrusher, have the output route out to a microKorg or MS2000 for analog style filtering, then back into the MPC1000 and resample. very tweakable. you can also bitcrush your resampled bitcrushed sample, then do it again and again until your ears bleed.....

Nice moves.I like this idea just reading about it.

I use a Yamaha a5000 to resample filter and distort. You can also take it down to 8 bit.The filter and the
distortion alone really are enough to get major grit.
