Creating drum kits and programs

I have followed some of the threads and have now been able to successful move samples that I have in categorized folders from my PC over to the 4000. Now that I've done that what I'm trying to do is build drum kits using the samples from the categorized folders(snare, kik, hihats, etc). The way that I've been attempting to do this is to load the samples I want to use into a program in memory and then try to save that program back to the MPC. What I want to be able to do is save the program at the root of the MPC and then have that program reference the samples that are in each of their respective categorized folders. So when I want to reload a particular kit, I just load the program file at the root directory and it can pull in the samples associated with the program into memory from the respective categorized folders. Is there's a way I can do this or do programs look for samples in the same folders?

I prefer to work like this.

Organise your samples in a logical way on the computer or the MPC.

Whenever I create a new drum program I'll save it (in its own folder) WITH SAMPLES in a folder called 'Custom Kits'.

Working this way helps when you move on to working with multi's.

Of course there are many ways to organise your samples/ kits/ programs/ multi's...

There's nothing worse than loading a program only to find some or all of the samples are missing (moved, deleted, edited)!!!

SAVE PROGRAMS WITH SAMPLES!!

You could always save each project that you work on in its OWN folder by....

Creating a new folder and name it the project name.

SAVE ENTIRE MEMORY to the folder.

Now you can load the entire project by selecting the folder and loading ALL MULTI+SEQ+PGM+SOUNDS at once...

Thanks for the response. Just so I understand, if you do it this way, you'll end up have 2 copies of the same sample on the MPC hard drive, right. You'd have the original sample in the categorized folder and then another copy of the same sample in the folder with the newly created program. Am I reading that right?

True...

Just an idea if you got the memory use it. Set your kits up like banks using A thur F that way you can have six different variation of the same kits or different samples and kits but all in the same locations. That way you can change up any time. Plus pad button allows you to change a sound anytime.

True.

One copy remains in the 'sample library' whether this on your computer or MPC.

The other copy is used in a program and saved on the MPC.

It's not a good idea to work on your only copy of a sample, there's a 1000 things that can go wrong.

Cool. This workflow sounds like something I can work with. So when you are ready to use one of the kits in the subfolders in the Custom Kits folders, do you manually load the program and associated samples into memory via ak.sys? When I try to load programs from nested folders, I can't seem to do this on the MPC.

Personally I don't use Aksys unless it makes a task easier for me.

Loading a program or multi directly from the MPC is as easy as it gets.

You can use Aksys to load programs and multi's if you've got it working as intended.

And don't be too concerned about having a duplicate of your samples on either the MPC or another hard drive.

Gives you a BACK-UP of your sample library, which is a good thing.

So, if you've got folders of each individual kit inside the folder you have called Custom Kits, who do you load the each kit from the MPC? When I click LOAD on the MPC, I can see other folders, but I there doesn't seem to be a way to load individual programs within those folders or much less programs within the main folders like you suggested. If I'm missing something in the manual, please point me to it. the only programs I can load are the ones at the root of the MPC hard drive and those in one folder below. But even in the folders that are one folder deep I have to load ALL SEQS+MULTS+PROGRAMS+SAMPLES. Please advise.

Navigate the folders as you would on a PC.

Choose 'View all files' or 'View programs' in the appropriate field.

Use the black coloured cursor ring to move right and get into your folders, use the jog dial itself to scroll through the folder contents.

Find the program you want to load, press do it (with samples).

Yup, you can load your samples from a USB drive to if you have one using the front USB port, I import my exported samples from Recycle straight off a USB drive, it holds all my newly created drums to load from my library stored on my computer. This is also an easy way of creating drum kits and programs.
