Using 2kxl as a controller ine Traktor Scratch Pro 2

I was going to throw this topic on the Traktor site, but it's really the MPC that's giving me the problem. If anyone is familiar with Traktor, you can set up cue points to trigger via an external controller. I had this working fine with my midi keyboard, but then i wanted to use my MPC instead. Basically, I went into the MIDI param menue and moved some stuff around the best I knew, and I'm not getting any MIDI data to my Traktor audio 10 interface. Traktor displays a midi data indicator light that will blink so you at least know you're receiving the data. I have the MPC MIDI out A running to the MIDI IN on my interface. I have output A selected in the MPC's MIDI menu, indicating that it is to SEND data. And the MMC is switched to ON. Then in the next menu I flipped on pads 1 through 4 to send on independent channels. I think this is where I'm messing up. Channels verse Controller number, I'm a little thrown off. Anyone?

OK I don't know the exact details for Traktor, but set up in the MPC for this is way simpler than you are reporting.

First off, "I have output A selected in the MPC's MIDI menu"....ok that's problem one. The midi menu in the MPC is not really about sending midi data...it's about sending 'SYNC' data. You do not need to worry about it.

Basically, each track in a sequence can output midi, independent of many of that midi menu. You set it up PER TRACK (way more flexible, see?).

So create a new sequence, go to the main screen, go down to the bottom where it says DRUM1 or DRUM(1-4)...whatever. Put your cursor on that and rotate LEFT til it says MIDI. Now that track is ready to output MIDI.
Now you will see the field just to the right of that changed to something saying 'CHannel 1-a' or 'track 1-a' or 'midi 1-a'...I cant remember exactly but it will say '1-A' somewhere in there. That stands for 'CHANNEL 1, PORT A'. Make sense?
So you set up each track to be a different channel...which is definitely unnecessary in the situation you describe.

Point is, get your tracks outputting MIDI NOTES properly like I described, and then you will see midi data showing up in traktor. from there, you can set it up how you want.

PROTIP: by default, the mpc lays out midi note numbers in a totally messed up layout...they will not be sequential...if this turns out to be a problem (shouldnt, if Traktor has a midi learn function)...i can help you get them in sequential order. But really that shouldn't matter in this case.

woa, what? and you are not concerned really with channels or controller numbers...you just need to get the note numbers from channel 1.

awesome. I've scrolled over that midi toggle a million times too. totally overthinking this. everything is clickin fine now. And as for using diff ch on diff seq makes total sense and is exactly what i need. i can just use the wheel to change which of my 4 decks i'm controlling. this is the exact set up i was going for. thanks a lot

For sure. You can do quantized looped sequences and trick them out on a 2nd pass, trigger FX... all that. it's nuts. I was that "vinyl or die" type of DJ till now... so i'm still getting aquainted, but yea that's the type of stuff I wanna do. These kids comming up on this software don't even have a grasp for it's potential, they just like that it auto-syncs each track... but yea i'll whip up a vid when I get something really nice put together. If you've seen the DJ craze Traktor Demo vids... it's some wild shit, endless possibilities. i'll be sure to follow up
