So this is the problem:

I am triggering some vsti with the pads. Only sequencer is the MPC.
Everytime I record, it just plays the midi attack notes back, meaning the sustain of the midi note/sound is completely gone. Is there anything I have to setup in order to record midi notes correctly?

Thanks in advance

old post but just found it in google.

was wondering about this problem i had similar when i was playing my mates synth hooked up to my MPC 60 recording the midi into it, if i held a chord on the synth, then played my recording back on the 60 it wouldnt hold the sustain. I think this is a similar problem? Ive read the manual and it says sustain is possible but it sounds confusing. I dont have a synth hooked up now, but i've got an S950 and im wanting to loop some atmospheric sounds from the S950 using my MPC 60 pads. Is this difficult. I've not had a proper chance to try this yet, I work 94hr weeks. But I did try briefly and whilst i got a loop going (60 triggering s950 from midi) when it came to recording it wouldnt hold the MPC 60 pads sustain, so the recording just had a few millisecs click at the beginning. Can the MPC 60 not handle any midi note length, are they essentially just the attacks of the midi notes, for instance in ableton u can draw a note to any length, can the 60 do this?

Cheers

MIDI notes dont have attack or sustain sections. It's just on or off.

The MPC60 sends a "sustain pedal off" message (cc64,value 0) when you hit stop.
On some synths (Moog Voyager, I'm looking at you) this will kill the release section of the envelope, so when you press play after hitting stop your sound will be shorter.

If you are triggering a VSTi , try filtering out cc64 in your host/DAW. That should do the trick.

EDIT: Lol , I just noticed how old the original post is. I wunder if he's still around or figured it out ?

@Gowansy. Aye, sounds like it may be the same problem.

It would if you could but you cant. (that I know of anyway)
You have to disable it at the synth/sampler your sequencing or use something to filter out the message.
This can usually be done within your DAW or MIDI filter.
I use an old Opcode 8portse as a thru box which can filter out which ever MIDI messages you like.
This can also be done using things like some of the MOTU MIDI interfaces (which you can run standalone - no computer connected ) or the MIDI Solutions Router (1-in 2-out MIDI data router/filter).

I tink the reason the MPC60 does this is so that when you are using a sustain pedal to hold notes , if you pressed stop before sending a sustain off message the notes would be left hanging.

It's a total pain in the ass though. I wish it could be disabled on the MPC60.

thanks once again mate. this seems to be a pain for such a simple task. is there any way you can change the length of a midi note in the MPC in edit mode of some kind? say i have a 1 bar sequence and have one midi note from one of the pads 1 bar long?

i really cant wait to get the time to have a proper mess about, but im at work. its disappointing to think that when a synth is hooked up to the mpc it cant record a simple task of holding a lengthened note in midi, without having some silly thing to do. my setup is just a mixing desk, mpc 60, s950 and mbase11, im gonna be adding a synth soon, i dont work ITB but it looks like i may have to incorporate that into my setup as the MPC 60 is starting to disappoint on bread and butter functions and i may have to start phasing it out but i just love the sound and drum sequencing too much :(

Yes , go into step edit and change the last field of the line ( D: )
The value for a full bar is 384.

The 60 has no problem holding long notes and a note can be any size up to the length of your sequence.
The only problem is if the synth your sequencing miss- uses the MIDI spec and uses cc64 for something other than the sustain pedal. (which is a different thing from the sustain section of your synths envelopes)

For example , the Moog Voyager uses cc64 to control release of the amp envelope.
This means when I hit stop on the MPC release gets set to 0.
I can get around the problem by inserting cc64 with the appropriate value at the start of a sequence but I tend to just sequence it from someting else.
This wprk around would also sort out the problem if your ever sequencing your mates synth again.
What was the synth you were having trouble with ?

I've used my MPC60 with various synths (and an S950) and the Voyager is the only one I've found so far that has a problem.

Something else to check if your on OS 3.1 is - in step edit options there is a field to change weather recorded notes will be the length of a step or as recorded.
Maybe you had it set to length of a step when working with your mates synth.

cheers, thats good news i can edit the length in step edit mode, im on os 2.12 but im going to grab os 3.1 for sure now, im starting to realise the differences and why people say its pretty essential. the synth i used round my mates was a novation v-station. i had a rhodes type chord sound and i was playing a held minor 7 chord, i recorded it and played back my sequence of drums with the minor chord to find that the minor chord wasn't held, but more like a stab. im not going to be buying a v-station but im gonna be getting some form of synth sometime down the line and it occured to me that this could be a problem on all synths hooked to the mpc 60. currently looking at a yamaha dx100/dx7 or ensoniq esq-1, hopefully everything will be sound! cheers once again mate. :)
