Portable record players and goddamned crowds.

I don't like whipping mine out in charity shops and record stores anymore. They always attract a stinking crowd. I generally like to dig without an audience looking at me. Digging somewhere in a rural part of Britain where they only probably see black faces with afros on TV doesn't generally help not attract attention either.

Does anyone else get it? It felt kinda cool at first but then it got annoying. The same questions, the same comments, the same sort of wankers gawping at me. I don't need a crowd of old ladies staring at me digging and listening to records. It puts me off my zone.

Useful tool, but god do they attract a crowd.

Depending on what TT you got and how handy you are with a soldering iron, you can add a 1/8" headphone jack and speaker kill/shut-off switch.

Gotta wear your hard-face when you dig. I hate that shit too so I just act intimadating and aggressive like. Sometimes I pretend I'm sick and cough all over the place but there's always that one **** that hangs with you asking questions, so I get crazy and ask the guy "are you a woman?", they'll look at me weird and say no or usually they'll just leave.

When I go digging round the charity shops i get very impatient if someone is looking through the records, i feel like they wasting my time, have no real right to dig, and should just GTF out of my way.

and, i get SO mad if i'm looking through the records and someone even stands close to me.

as for using a handytrax type device, it's too time consuming. i've been scraping around for long enough to be able to spot what i'm looking for with a close examination of all the info on the record.

Yea, I usually dig first then go off into a more isolated area and do my best to play things off. I love my portable table...I just don't take it out as much w/ me.

I hear you on attracting people..I mean..it's portable and it's going to attract people. Especially older folk from previous generations who grew up off of vinyl. They thought that vinyl was a lost art till they seen you with one. I don't know how many times I get, "They still make records?"

I dont listen in the stores, but whenever anyone gets too close to me and asks dumb questions, I just ask them if they have heard the word of the lord, and they quickly get away. Bonus points if you ask them that question while making the most insane face you can. great fun

I never take a portable player but always wanted to, its the crowds that put me off so I wouldn't actually use it.

I recon it would be alright if you held up the cable with a bit of slack in it, wouldn't be as annoying as an actual portable player.

I don't have one to try it with, just looked for one for sale in the UK and everywhere seems to be out of stock

Someone must have one lying around they want to experiment with and share the results...

Don't record stores in the US have at least one feckin TT where you can listen to sh** before u buy???
