i think this is the right area for my question

recently bought midi/audio interface second hand which works fine but every now and again I get a wierd 'metallic' sound coming from the left speaker. This only happens when playong music through the interface (i.e not on CD playback). I've disconnected and re-connected all cables and this noise still happens intermittently. Normally if i turn my stereo off and leave it a few minutes it's all good but i'm wondering if anyone knows why or how this happens and if I mighta been sold a faulty piece of gear??

EDIT: it now happens regularly and affects both speakers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i don't think it's the speakers. This same weird sound now happens to samples when playing back in the load screen of my 500, but not when they're loaded and played thru the pads.
