e-mu proteus 2000, xv5080 or something similar

I've got a few hundred bucks, I'm looking to add a sound module of some sort. I've got 2 moogs, an emx and an mpc4000. I'm looking for probably 70% acoustic instrument emulation, 30% synth capabilities. Right now I'm leaning towards a proteus2000. I'm some what confused between the e-mu models, though. They are all basically the same thing but with different roms in them, right? Is the architecture and upgrade capabilities the same?

On the other side, a jv2080 or xv5080 have been on my want list for a while. So I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or suggestions on any of this? I'd be open to other hardware suggestions. I'm looking for rackmount only and no computer stuff, as I'm trying my best to function without a computer. Thanks in advance.

I 've had a emu pk6 and emu proteus 2000... loved them both. only got rid of em becuase of issues with space in a small apartment (me the kid the wife and bunch of hardware) needed to downsize / migrate to software. I regret getting rid of em both. But now I have a xv 3080 with ultimate keys rom. i like it a lot. the keys are killer. thee is a clarity and warmth you gotta love. 3080 is cheaper than 5080 because it has no sampler so if you dont need the sampler (and adat out) its even cheaper to get the 3080 and still loads of rom slots.

Both the P2K and the XV5080 are great units. I use the 5080 with a couple of the expansion roms and it is my go to synth for most basic and quality sounds.

Good call on the 3080. I totally forgot about that one while looking around last night. So in your opinion, what do/did you like more. the proteus or the 3080?

And what roms do you suggest for the 5080, zukan?

The 3080 in my opinion. Roland sounds are great. Love em. I got the vintage (edit... I mean ultimate rather than vintage) keys because it has the following roms in it

SR-JV80-04 "Vintage Synth,"
SR-JV80-08 "Keyboards of the '60s & '70s"
SR-JV80-10 "Bass & Drums,"
plus selected waves from SR-JV80-09 "Session"
SR-JV80-03 "Piano."

I'd been wanting the Vintage and 60s/70s for some time so this was a great deal.

SR-JV80-04 & 12 here (vintage synth & hip hop). Some ill expansions to say the least.

Even though the machine (3080) is more than the emu, the expansions seem damn near dirt cheap where as the emu roms are still a few hundred bucks. I think that might tip it towards the 3080. How many does it hold again?

3080 holds 6 roms. I think 2 JV slots and 4 srx slots. I've seen these roms on craigs list for as little as $80.

im suprised peeps is still buying these hardware module since software caught up and is so convenient

Some of us don't trust computers.

It's not even that I don't trust them....I actually just don't like them.

To be honest, I have a decent enough computer sitting right here, it has a few soft synths and all that and I when i sit down and screw around with them I like them but I have yet to ever actually make a song with them. There is something just so insanely counter intuitive and creativity-killing about computers to me. I wish I didn't have that, I'm fully aware of how insanely powerful computers can be, but it just doesn't do it for me.
