Anyone here DJ?

I'm gonna start djing for my school next year because all of our past DJ's have sucked. I have the laptop and tables but need some speakers the school will pay for. So does anyone know the names of some quality and loud speakers that can power sound through a decently sized gym?

Hire a local system, and ensure you get the engineer for the night aswell.

what does that even mean

In your area there will be people who specifically supply/rent speaker systems for club nights and other events.

Usually you will get a sound engineer who will help you set everything up, and he will control the volume levels throughout the night on a seperate mixer and ensure the system sounds good all night.

Do this and talk with the engie to see if you can buy it off of him!

I got mine by lease/purchase this way!

JBL's are nice speakers and not overly expensive. Make sure you get a sub-woofer with whatever you get. Your going to need 2 amps unless you have the money for one strong enough to run all 3 speakers efficiently. I'm no pro on the dj equipment tip, and most guys that dj buy what is suggested to them. Hit your local dj store up and talk to a professional that really knows about the ohms, amperage, and all that good stuff. You don't want to by a cheap setup and be maxing the equipments limits for hours!
PS. when it comes to cd turntables, DO NOT be cheap! Cheap cd turntables will get funky on you and sometimes play, sometimes won't, may skip, lock-up. Go with Pioneer, or high end Denon. I've been out the loop for a few years..might be something better out now...

i've been putting on warehouse parties for 25 years. we have one this saturday (anybody in sydney, pm for the details).

here's the deal. you need a lot of sound and it has to be good quality sound. there's no point in playing great records if you don't have a good sound system. you look like a fool and nobody has a good time.

you need 4 point sound. that is, a bass bin and tops in four corners. The easiest solution - just order a four point Function One sound system. the aim of the four point sound is that no one is ever very far from a speaker when they are on the dancefloor - it sounds rich and full wherever they're dancing. rather than just sounding good for the two metres in front of two speakers.

never ever use powered speakers. they are only suitable for bingo halls and have a very harsh sound that cannot be pushed.
remember, if you push a system into the red, because you didn't get enough sound in the first place, it's only makes the sound worse.

the point is not to have a sound system so people can hear the music, they need to be able to FEEL the music. and that takes big bass bins. put all your money and effort into getting the best and biggest sound system you can.

every famous club in the world was also famous for their sound system.

While I completely agree w/ you beach_break, we're talking about a school gym .

but just imagine the reputation felly will have if he books the paradise garage sound system for a school dance - blows the doors off the gym, sets off every car alarm in a two-mile radius and renders the teachers deaf.

didn't hip hop start at a kid's dance in a community center? if cool herc had just turned up with two powered EVs, we may never have never heard of hip hop. instead, go-go would rule the world.
