Anyone Know of an effect to cut lots of little bits out?

I'm working on some project making an audio piece to represent budget cuts and have recorded a load of different sounds, now I want to cut out about 40% in little snippets?!?!
I'm using Logic to do it and at the moment I'm using the automation tool, its really tedious so wondered if anyone knew of some kind of effect that can do this for me?

Does Logic have a scissors tool? I guess it must be standard across all DAWs...

Yeah, I'd just chop up the audio and mute the parts you don't need. Maybe what you're doing is more specific?

Yeah I think it has a scissors tool but don't really know my way round Logic too well.
Automations working fine just taking ages and thought there could be more of an accurate way to take 40% out without just guessing.

What it is, is that I've recorded a loud of sounds from around my uni and now they fade into each other but I want to take hundreds of little snippets out (the 40% is silence) randomly all over the 5 minute piece to represent the student budget cuts.
Taken about an hour and a half to do about a minute and a half of audio so wondered if there was a magic vst or something that could do this for me

The 'random' part is the problem here.

There's plenty of auto-gate style plugins around which may do the job though. I got hold of one designed by BT recently called Stutter Edit. That could take the pain out of it.

Cheers dude, think I may just carry on the hard way if theres not a simple logic effect or something that does it, by the time I've downloaded and worked out how to use it I could have finished.

Have you tried the 'strip silence' feature in logic?
It acts kind of like recycle in that it finds all the transients, breaks your audio up into a billion chunks (depending on how big the file is), and makes them each their own region. Then, you can kind of randomly click and erase some, move them around, or throw them into the sampler and randomly bang out a new sequence from these 'bits'.

You can adjust the sensitivity and that might help break it up how you want.

Is that what you are trying to do?

That worked perfect!!!
I didn't realise you could do that and thought the only way would be some sort of plug-in effect!
the files are all a few minutes long and its cut them into little sections I can put in at random.

Yep. It's in most of the major DAWs like Logic, Pro Tools, Cubase/Nuendo, DP, et cetera...for those who didn't know. Very handy.

No, Live does not have it. To be fair, Live doesn't really work in the manner that the others do, it's kind of created a niche for itself. However, it would be useful to have that feature in Live.

couldn't you get the same effect using a gater and setting it to random or something?

I suppose there's no point if you've found a solution already though.

This brings up a question I was wondering the other day that I bet Nym could answer, does Reaper have a similar function?

Reaper is awesome, but I don't use it a lot, so I don't know. Does it have any sort of transient/silence detecting wave splitter?
If not that'd be a good request.
