Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

What’s up y’all i’m on an mpc 2000xl now and i need to sample all my drums since im using zip disks and the only zip drive i have is one built in to the 2000. Can y’all give me some tips on sampling kicks, i have two “breaks” records and i can get snares and hi hats to sound real good, but when i try to sample a kick i can’t get it to hit at all. Any tips, i’d appreciate it all thanks.

i make my kicks using 3 elements 'click' (100Hz+), 'thud' (60Hz) and 'boom' (20-60Hz -usually from an 808 0r 909 bass drum), and eq each element individually so that it fits together nicely and sounds good with the track.

you might want to use some sidechain compression if your track has a lot of bass, and you want the kick drum to remain prominent.

the frequencies i used above are only an approximation.

i use ableton or logic to make kicks as i struggle without eq on the xl. and even when i do make a nice kick on the mpc when i come to record it sounds enormous and eats everything else up in the mix, even though it sounded good coming out of my monitors.

Try to record the kick from vinyl to PC.

Then output the kick from your PC back to the 2000. Raise your record in volume to at least halfway level. Then when pushing out the signal from the pc keep playing the kick until the meter on the MPC is about to peak or is at peak. Record that kick and it should hit hard.

The reason why I record vinyl into pc first is because I can raise the output with a minimal signal to noise ratio. That way it sounds good without distorting too much.

I use a 1616m pcie as my soundcard

check out the thread that says "DRUMS" i just explained in there how to layer the same kick over itself with a filter apllied it should help you out... also pitching down and using the resonance with the low pass filter will help with the sound of your kick...
