Dirtying up samples/loops

I've read a lot on dirtying up your drums, but havn't seen many tips on doing that to your samples and loops. My problem is the drums are sounding nice and grimey but the samples dont seem to sit well - they are waaay too clean in comparison. i know I need to experiment (probably with Bitrate and EQ) but i was just wondring if anyone had any new tips they wanted to share?

Try recording them to a casette and then sampling them back to the MPC and then layering them back with the original, adjust to taste.

Or if you got a mike and an amp, route those little beauties to the amp and record the result.

I was going to suggest the tape trick as well. Any of the same techniques you use on drums can be applied to any sample. The EQ settings might be different, but that depends on the type of sample you have. What I do is sample into my ASR and run some distortion FX on the sample, that makes it sound nice and raw.

what do you sample off of?

i mean, if you are sampling vinyl and get too clean of a sound....maybe try getting 2 sets of needles. One thats clean, and then a shitty one that adds a little grit.

Or maybe try overloading your mixer: like route just your bassline to a channel, overdrive it so it gets a little fuzz.

Or you could even get a record, and just record like 4 bars of hiss and overlay it.

Try just a little bit of filter on all your samples....enough where it doesnt effect the sample, but gives them all the same kinda quality.

try useing some of the gruneliser effects and stuff. u can add tape hiss nosie and dirt to your samples on the pc.
