Abelton LIVE.. Full Daw.. Best for LIVE sets , show stuff , hence the name LIVE.
Logic (MAC Only) Full Daw Best for tracking and External Gear related Production.
Protools Full Daw Best all around DAW , tracking , beat making , live sets.
FLstudio (PC only) Full Daw Best for step sequencing production. Some nice synths , epic piano roll plugins .Can sample , and track vocals
Reason Partial Daw (will not track vocals without a separate plugin) Best for music production. Great sound banks and patches.

Any of thoes 4 will be in the "Best" category and cost around the same give or take $100-300 for this package or that.

I'm sorry but the rest is just crap in my opinion. I have used all of them at one point. As I developed I moved on to better. As of now that is Logic and Protools.

Agreed. Why do we all have to worry about which DAW to use? We have those amazing tools, so that we can focus on important thing; produce something (I don't mean it as commercial products.)
This is like seeing writers worrying about which pen they should use (should I get a Montblanc, is Parker good enough?)

I would say that software is not required. I still use Tascam Portastudio 424 (just using it as a mixer, I cannot find chrome cassettes anyway!) to record beats from MPC, or Electribe ES-1 (LOL!). I'm on low budget, since I really am on low budget!

In my opinion, tracking MPC-500 with ProTool seems overkill...

I don't do this, but for you can even use GarageBand for recording. You can apply compression etc, within GarageBand. As far as audio quality is concerned, it is as good as Logic (just less parameters to set up.)

Technologically, we are living in a dream, if you remember early 90s', or even earlier.
