:) :) I made the hole last KilowaxMusic EP "RenLa", with MPC2000XL & VS1680 only! But yeah! I deliberately forget to mention, I've sample all synths parts from my homie's Korg... played all basslines live on my 1680, but once again not mention the Avalon préamp... and so on :D :D ...
But my CD ain't turn platinium, and trust me man got skills and hot tracks :D :D :D !

Kayne needs a sound designer to work on those "Kayne faaaatttt dddrrummmzz!!!"? he have it !
Kayne needs to filter those sampling voices thru a Urei filter? he have it!
Needs a keyboardist to play on it? Have the weeckeedest outta Chi-Town!
Needs more radio-rotation, promo things? Done!!!
Waan turn it platinium? Done!!!

So, yes what do I need at home, more than a simple mixer and mpc???

Ya remember Pippen/Jordan? Pippen always said he could score as much as partna... it's all about the Bull's game-plan!!!

:D   :D

Peace!

Mixing and mastering is the last step in the recording process so that is why most pros go to a pro studio and have an experienced, highly skilled pro master the mix for them. Why spend thousands of dollars for equipment to have an mediocre mix because of lack of experience, knowledge and know how. Engineers and mixers are trained pros or came up under pros with a track record of ready for the radio mixes. Come on it has been said many times on the board how if a record company has a budget to mix and master a project it would be referred to a established pro mixing and mastering pro. Can anyone on this board mix and master as good as Manny Marroquin who did Jesus Walks and others. If you can I could send you my session at an discounted rate. Sticks to the basics make good music then take it to a pro and really have it shine. :D

Sound designing comes before recording so you need to have science on how eq filter shape and so... If not you could buy decent CD Rom with drumz, but they'ren't yours!
Be good at your tools doesn't mean to nah learn about what you gonna use to your final mix, with your pro ingeneer and so!
How could you say what kind of préamp, converterz filterz eq or compressor, if you don't even know about dem or never mess with dem?
If you don't know, an ingeneer neva tell "yo let's go heat analog!"... "let's try this or that!" At last how would you give your recording session an identity?
If it could be done on small Makie boards & Berhinger outboards why pros are so stupids to own SSL & Pultec,
:) :)
Peace

Stuff like Lil Jon or those R&B tracks with guitars and shakers (they all sound the same to me) would be nothing without the engineering aspect (sometimes i think how top 40 hip hop is more engineering technique than music) but i think most of kanye's stuff can stand on its own without fancy mastering. give the man some credit.

I agree that the more you know the more you can do for yourself. However the smart money is to have people more skilled, more knowledgeable and definitively more experienced than yourself to mix and master your session for you. Like a Jimmy Douglass, Dave "Hard Drive" Pensado, Tony Maserati, Brian "Big Bass" Gardner, Manny Marroquin, Eddie Sancho, Gimel "Guru" Keaton or an Andre" Dr Dre" Young for your session as your team member to get the shine for your project. There is a big advantage to working with a seasoned pro to show you the ropes and bring out the best in your sound than trying to do everything yourself.

Behind every great producer is an equally great engineer. I forgot who said it but it damn sho makes sense.

Dre and Gardner

Jay and Guru

Premo and Sancho

Timbo and Douglass

Once you find the man to fit your sound stick with them as a member of your team.

Peace. :D

Yall want some hearsay?

An acquantence of mine was the assistant engineer for some Kanye sessions (not for College Dropout). Kanye brought in the MPC2000 and an ASR10 to the session, with a bunch of disks. He posted up for a bit, then bounced and was not there for the majority of the sessions. His music had to be heavily engineered due to lack of that "commercial" sound...it wasn't bangin' comin outa the 2 instruments. The individual tracks were ran through tons of different high-end vintage pres, compressors, verb units, EQs, etc.

Like I said, this is hearsay...just what I was told.

That being said, yes...you don't need a ton of gear. Musically, your shit can be hot right out the box. But to get that "sound" like some other posters have noted, you need to run it through the post production process, which don't forget...also includes mastering. There's a reason why the top mixing engineers and the top mastering engineers are paid big bucks, and it's because the post-production process is their craft...just like creating music is yours. Look at the album credits, the engineers are credited for a reason.

Exactly...unless you are truly skilled engineer, which I'm sure some of you might be, the DIY fantasy will make your music sound amateur. Being smart, especially in this industry, is knowing what you're good at, and knowing when to get help.

It also depends though, if you are even going for that big pop commercial sound (Jay-Z, Fabolous, etc). Some people aren't...
