He's got 2 Midi Patchbays. The MidiTimePiece AV"s are 8 in , 8 out MIDI box for the
computer that let's you do complete patching and filtering that you need. What he is
saying is that he 2 Midi Patchbays, so a total of 16 Midi In's and Out's. These work with
or without the computer. So he's go the ultimate Midi Patchbay.
He also has several synthesizers that all have at least 16 way multitimbaral. He would like
to have these setup using Midi Channel 1 - 16 on those ports, so he can get to any
of his instruments on that synth by selecting that port and the Midi channel.
He is saying that 4 x 16 midi channels that the MPC 4000 is not enough for his studio.
As that is only 64 channels and would only handle 4 of his synths.
That's a current limitation of MPC. It's also what puts up above it's brother hardware sequencer's is that it DOES handle 64 channels rather then 16 or 32 like most others
do.
I could see this being useful to Akai, but also difficult to implement. They would need
to work with all of the major manufacturers of MIDI interfcaces to get them to build
drivers or Akai would need to build drivers to get these to work. Which ones should they
implement, which ones shouldn't they. They would then also be relying on 3rd party items
in their setup. So if their were Midi issues. it would be harder for them to pin point them.
So if they implemented it, I would be using my Midi TimePiece and plug it directy in, but
until then, I just have my 4 out's going into my Midi TimePiece and 2 outs from the Midi TimePiece going into the 2 ins on the MPC 4000. And then use ClockWorks editor to draw
a patch between the different ports. Though this doesn't allow them use all 16 of their
Midi Channels, It does connect my MPC up to all of my Synth without having to daisy chain
a bunch of Thru's.
