Is there a law on Filipping midi?

I mean someone can take a midi file a pro composed and edit it and add differnt insturments in and add notes. Would they concider this sampling? some artist in the 70s got sued for taking compositions from artist of the 50s.

what i wanna know is if i sample cat stevens is that considered fighting terrorism, and hence okay.

I think that is the same as sampling as far as the law in the U.S. is concerned. That is much harder to prove for the original owner, though than using an actual audio sample.

I don't think you can use melodies that have been used before. If you would change one or two notes it's legal though.
I know there is a computersystem somewhere that checks every harmony played on the radio in the UK, and cross references it with songs in their database.

If it's not a hitsingle you're stealing, you might get away with it anyway.

Part of sampling is the "recording" and the "composition"

Since there is no recording violation when using midi, then you got composition copyrights.

Well if you rearrange the shit enough that someone might not be able to tell, its not the same composition.

Its kinda like how dr.dre interpolates his samples. Hell sample something, arrange it, then have musicians play it out.

yeah it seems like at this point they've locked everything down to where the only difference between sampling and what is vaguely defined as interpolation is they cant deny you the right to interpolate. you still have to pay them.
