How to program change mid-song.

Okay, here's what I'm trying to do. I have a full song where I would like to change couple of the programs to alternate ones at some point during the song. Then, I would like to change them back to their original programs after. How is this done?

I'm "thinking" I have to implement a program change at that particular point where I want the program change to occur and then place another program change when I want to revert back to the original programs.

Is it as simple as going to the main screen, going to the program change line option and changing the number to that of the program that I want activated at the particular time that I want it done and then doing the same at the time where I want it to revert?

I've tried just changing that program change option to say "2" from "OFF" within the sequence that contains the change, but, then that affects all other tracks that were assigned to the previously selected program?

Also, I heard it's possible to do program changes to a different multi? How is this done also?

You have to right idea but you want to insert the program change in step editor or sequence editor. From the main page is real time I think. I recommend to do it in step edit that way you can see everything and just insert it.

Yes the multi is the same way. Use step edit to programming the changes this way you are telling the mpc when to complete the actions in advance. From the main page you are essentiallly changing the programs manually. Some like to do this way for live performance. But since you are programming your song use step edit or sequence edit. If you go to the bottom of both page change the view to program changes and etc from notes so you can see it clearly.

Thanks. It's a shame that here I was looking in the User Guide for info on how to insert program changes, but, that information is only within the Reference Guide. Ridiculous how I constantly have to jump between the two. I wish Akai was more considerate of the users' time.

One last question: I read another post where someone suggested that you insert a blank bar in sequences where you want to impart multi changes because they tend to take time. Is this true?

Yes I believe that is true. Especially for live usage.

Just reading your post.

Your situation is comes up quite often.

1. Switching programs/ sounds can be done by assigning the same program to a different Part Number. Whatever changes you make to the second program will not affect the first program on the other part number.

For example:

Verse 1 (A1)

Part #17 has your favorite Hip Hop Drums-1

Chorus 1 (B1)

Part #17 has your favorite Hip Hop Drums-1 (are not used)

Part #27 TR-808 Drums-1 are used with a slow moving filter adjustment via the Q-Link Knob Q1.

Verse 2 (A2)

Part #17 has your favorite Hip Hop Drums-1 (are used again)

Part #27 TR-808 Drums-1 are used with a slow moving filter adjustment via the Q-Link Knob Q1.


If you program your entire drum kit on the same track (which I advise against), then you can assign your drums to the outputs 1-8 via the ADAT Card or Analog out card and execute your mix automation (Mutes, Solos, Adding Efx, Panning) through the MPC or through your DAW.
