drum rack in ableton live 8 is close. with a few tweaks, ableton could have a monster.

i know they've been working with some producers who come from mpc backgrounds. hopefully they can add some feats to drum rack and it would be money.

if you use drum rack with an mpd controller, you can do 16 levels velocity, but not 16 levels of tuning. they also need to add a note repeat button that works like an mpc and an mpc style filter (preferably like the filter in the 4000, but i'd settle for just a low pass filter like the 3000 or 2000XL).

if they add just those feats. they'd have monster. that combined with what ableton already offers would be a major come up.

Yes the Note Repeat implementation on the MPD32 is awful. The issue being the MIDI clock has to be set to internal on the MPD to make it work, and then the MPD's clock doesn't play nice with Live or whatever program you're using. It's so flaky that when you're not using Note Repeat on just normal pad triggering you'll think you messed up your audio buffer settings. Switch it to external and your DAW clock, and it triggers just fine but no Note Repeat.

It's also silly that the Note Repeat button can't be user assigned. In BPM I just make one of the buttons under the faders Note Repeat and set it to momentary on the MPD.

A MIDI controller deals with no audio, so 16 Level Tuning is off the table. It would be possible to have the controller pick up the root note of your original sample and then alter what MIDI notes the pads are sending when the mode is engaged, but I think that would require some kind of software bridge in the PC/Mac to facilitate the communication. How an APC40/Launchpad talks to scripts built into Live to superimpose that red box is the kind of thing I mean, or how KORE had higher than MIDI 128 step resolution on it's knobs, but it was done in the software. If you're suggesting a filter on the MPD, again it's a MIDI controller so no audio manipulation possible. You should be able to find a VST filter you can drop on your Drum Rack that's similar in character to the 4000's filter.

If we're not talking about a partial direct emulation of the MPC OS like RS-16, I agree with what others here have said suggesting Geist (insert into older Guru posts :D ), Maschine and Drum Racks in Live. When I was poorer I ended up at one time or another buying EVERY pad controller released, and with that trying every software that might fit that style flow. It was a good experience because I learned a lot about MIDI and also how to do a lot of classic hip hop production techniques in the box, but at the end I still wanted an MPC. My money's better now and I have a few MPC"s and kept all the apps and MIDI controller's, so it's best of both worlds for me. But anyone chasing this kind of setup because you really would rather have an MPC, be patient and save up, and in the meantime enjoy all the in the box DAW techniques you'll learn.

There are all kinds of filters built into the drums racks.

I am still not sold on any particular software that can replace an MPC. But I do hope some company can pull it off. But the key to pulling it off would be to design a controller on the level of an MPC. An MPD32 comes the closest. But I want a controller that has the MPCs data wheel and full host of dedicated buttons: cursor, erase, UNDO, step, bar, locate, etc.

If Maschine's software was more customizable to allow it to work with an MPD32, I would give it the nod. BMP is promising especially with that custom control surface I have seen around the internet.

i feel like DAWs could do it if only they paid more attention to mouseless navigation.
or if a hardware developer built a split midi controller/computer keyboard type device...one with a usb output for the computer keyboard and midi outputs for the midi control.
i would go nuts for a VST version of jjos, even one that was trimmed down to just a basic DRUM PGM player w/ all the same parameters as jjos.

i feel like what often ends up happening w/ these types of things is that developers start trying to do too much and lose focus...so you end up with a feature/function/fx rich environment that is a pain to navigate or look at.

I sold my Mpc to go the Reason/Record/Recycle/Mpd32 route. I'm also incorporating Sonar 8 and a plethora of VST's in the mix as well. I love Mpc's but for me my current set up makes an Mpc feel antiquated. For me doing everything ITB is the only way to go :D

have a look at renoise + mpe tool. They are both free downloads and almost all functions are midi assignable.

That article is basically a slanted view, that amounts to an advertisement. But I expect nothing less from you, as your posts all have the same silly, "Maschine rules, everything else sucks." Keep it fanboy bro.
