multitrack

Trying to get a proper old school DIY vibe going on to record my beats so I was thinking a cassette recorder would serve me well but I got the tascam 414 MKII and find it very confusing and not easy to use.

Any recommendations on what to get, any supports welcome as long I don't need a computer

I'm thinking about the Boss BR-1200....

consider for a moment that if you think the Tascam 4 track cassette is confusing to use, nothing is going to be any easier.

I'd say master the tascam first (since you got it), then move on to something else. That's a very basic unit that will actually help you learn before you jump into more complicated stuff.

you are not going to make pro recordings with it but it's a good thing to start with, and actually powerful for how simple they are.

Run those hurdles now so when you do get something better it'll all be downhill. The 414 mkII was my first multitrack too but its really not a hassle once you do a few recordings and thats how you learn, from your mistakes.

I should actually point out that this is not true. I do know of at least one 'pro' album cut entirely on this exact model.

what i should have said, is you are not going to get state-of-the-art modern-day clean recordings out of it, without trying really really hard. of course there's nothing wrong with that.

what you should get (besides the manual) is an understanding of your tascam!

Without trying to sound like a d*ck, you need to get a general understanding. Forget about understanding the tape deck, I think you would benefit from learning about multitrack recording in general. THAT would suit you better.

Yeah, I think you'd do exceptionally well with a tascam 688 midistudio.

nah dude I do agree, I've got tons of experience being recorded as a guitar player but I never really took the time to understand what was going on on the other side I guess...

^ Thats a more common occurrence than you think, trust me. Start with the basics, then you will realize that no matter what you are using (tape, CD, HD, DAW) its all the same basic principles.
