Dont have the original First Natural Hair Band LP :( I got it from the Dusty Fingers vol2 LP
I like it too. Especially the alternating horn stabs and the overall sound.

Oh i almost forgot. You can also watch out for a Hohner HS1E. Its a Casio FZ10m in another case. I thought about getting a FZ10m too cause the FZ1 is so damn heavy and I'm a bit afraid that the provisional fixture on my desk won't last very long.

super badass...thank you! That low-hz really kills it. For some reason in the EPS when you drop the fs it doesn't sound like you are losing as much high end...i don't know...i have not done a study on it too intensely.

nice choice of samples. care to provide the originals? as clean as possible at least? wav? people might be more likely to try other samplers if someone could just say 'here sample these'.

Of course everyone can try it with the sampler of choice. This samples are part of a kind of "sampler comparison" that I did 1 or two years ago :)

Here are the other files Included is a PDF with some infos about the samples and the way its done.

ORIGINAL

MPC 2000 Classic

Akai s950

This testing lacks on some files about the input stage that can color the sound extremly too.
I also did't get over my lazyness yet to complete this list with my TX16W.

But I have some other files to demonstrate:

Casio FZ1 Filter/Resonance demonstration on a well known drumloop

S950 hot input test

cut out some of those overdriven drums and just messed around with them

another test, cut out some of the drums from the first cycle (realtive undistorted drums) and messed around with the ADSR on the 950 to get cleaner drums

TX16W LoFi demo. Sorry I erased the WAV but...on the other hand.... it gets so damn lofi anyway. A bit harsh to the horn IMO :D

Yes the overall sound of that recording is fantastic!
I know about the german Hohner incarnations with the white finish. Yeah the keyboard version is a heavy beast... also space in the studio is getting lower and lower over here and I also thought about getting an ASR-10, an MV, etc... haha

I've owned an FZ-1 since 2000.
I even bought another one in 2005 just in case my first one broke :P

Both my FZ-1's have 2mb RAM. i.e. they both have the 1mb ram card installed into the ram expansion slot.

I love the sound of it - the way the samples sound as you play them at a lower octave along with adding crispy highs with the resonance and cuttoff freq cranked. Also, go into LOOP and nudge the offset to 0001 to add extra crispiness.

The filter can sound really good.

Check out all the tips and tricks at -> http://hem.passagen.se/highpuls/index.htm

Info, tips and tricks about the FZ-1 is sparse though unfortunately.

In the studio ?

A CASIO FZ-1 With Memory Upgrade and Data Cable to an old PC. Needs the LCD back light replaced.

Also a CASIO FZ-20M which is like a CASIO FZ-10M with 2MB of RAM and SCSI as standard. This is in good working order.

On the bench and in the parts bin ? A CASIO FZ-10M waiting in line for resurrection and a non standard memory upgrade hack.

I have been a fan of the CASIO FZ-1 since they came out back in 1987.

A "POG" ( cross between a Pig and a Dog ) to operate but worth the effort.

 a FZ20m. Rare stuff. How is the SCSI? Is it fully compatible to Zip or MO Disk or does it need something like a syquest?

I'm also interested in that Data Cable to an old PC thing. What is it about? Sample Dump to PC?

The OS is really a minus on that machine. Someone should program a new OS for this beast.

Yes. Rare alright.

Like the other CASIO FZ samplers
peterpiper wrote:How is the SCSI? Is it fully compatible to Zip or MO Disk or does it need something like a syquest?

ZIP == NO
JAZ == NO
SYQUEST == Wouldn't bother with SYQUEST drives of that vintage.
Old APPLE EXT SCSI HARD DISK ... you know, back when "megabytes" were the dizzy heights ? == YES
QUANTUM FIXED SCSI DISKS == YES but with various caveats. Too much detail to go into here.
BERNOULI == Check out Voynich on YOUTUBE using a BERNOULI to load various Fairlight sounds and cartoon FX.
MICROTECH PCD-25 == But very picky about the CF card type, size, adapters and such.

In essence the SCSI code of an FZ20 is not capable of accessing large sized devices.

The CASIO HDD OPERATOR disk can create formatted SCSI disks greater in size than the CASIO FZ-20M is able to reliably access.

The CASIO HDD OPERATOR disk much be loaded as an option in order to format a SCSI disk.

No optional software is needed to be loaded for read access to a SCSI disk formatted on the CASIO FZ-20M, HDD OPERATOR combination.

peterpiper wrote:I'm also interested in that Data Cable to an old PC thing. What is it about? Sample Dump to PC?

Yes. Sample dump between PC and CASIO FZ.

Or ... CASIO FZ and CASIO FZ.

peterpiper wrote:The OS is really a minus on that machine. Someone should program a new OS for this beast.

The OS is mostly good for considering the features present.

A few things annoy me but not too many.

New OS code for this machine is not beyond the realms of reality.

Deployment of same would not be easy though.

1: The main OS ROMS are through hole soldered in place.
2: The existing OS doesn't support booting a new OS from a floppy disk.
3: OPTIONAL load software is not the whole OS, simply part of one.

here's an old video I found with 2 fz-1's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7WiwgsKNf8
very neat what that thing can do

I'd also like to mention: the heavier the gear, the better it's built
By jimmie Mon Jun 20, 2011 11:34 pm
The only thing that annoys me about the FZ-1's OS is that you can't edit individual sounds whilst a bank is playing.
Other than that I can't think of anything that does my head in, but that's a biggie.

Well I find it sometimes frustrating that you cant use an empty voice with all filter and envelope settings as a preset. When you've sampled a new sound you always have to run thru all these settings again. Thats too much buttonclicks sometimes.
And like you said. Not being able to easily change pitch while playing a sequence in bank mode and always have to think in notenames (C4 rootnote, highest D4, lowest G3) and not just +/- x semitones is annoing too.

but the sound...... :)

BTW I'm thinking about to mod (or rather said "try to mod") my s900. I just saw the shematics and the signal path has that lopass filter in the input and also in the output stage. I guess they are used as antialiasing filters and I wonder whats happening when they get bypassed :D

It might produce a whole lot of ringing type sounds....much like when you 'bypass' the anti-aliasing filter in an EPS or MPC by using a non-standard sample rate.

I say do it.

Thats what I thought about :) But I opened it last night and realized that I'm not skilled enough for that task. I got the 900 service manual and tried to bypass the IC7 (MF6CN-50. A 6th order butterworth LP filter) by taking the IC out of its socket and just bridge the filter In to the filter out pin in the socket. The result was a much quieter signal (not just on the input but also on the output).
After that I tested whats happening when I try to sample without the the bridge in the socket. I thought the signal path should be non continuous so the signal cant be sampled at all but the result was the same like before(with the bridge) :?:
The MF6CN-50 is the only IC that sits in a socket and although this is just a spare s900 I dont want to hurt her. Damn, I thought this shit is easy ;)

This is out of the service manual.

When you say "service manual," you mean the one for the s900, right?
If you're curious about this filter IC, you should also check out the datasheet for the chip itself. Lots of info there, I took a glance at it.

I think your best bet for trying to bypass this filter would be somehow maxing out the cutoff frequency, effectively bypassing it, but still matching any impedances in the circuit (the filter was obviously doing some sort of buffering, as you saw when you got the quiet signal when shorting the input to the output)
The datasheet might give some insight on how to do this; from what I skimmed, it's a combination of an input clock frequency and the value of a capacitor that determine the filter cutoff frequency. Perhaps, then, the way to mod it would be replacing a certain cap with a smaller or larger value.
