how much is my record worth???

I have searched online and I see many different prices and I dont know what this record is worth.

Sun Ra and his Solar Arkestra "Planet Earth"

near mint condition

the label on the vinyl is red

I can post up the etched letters thats on the vinyl if that would help

here is what the cover looks like-

I paid 40 bucks for it (most I ever spent on a record). I dont think its a reissue, but how would I tell anyway?

Usually you can tell if something is a reissue by the catalog number, but sometimes it's not that easy. I think the etchings are another good place to look.

Also at $40, you can bet that whoever is selling it likely did their homework. Where you are going to find good deals is on stuff that is super cheap because the seller hasn't bothered to look it up. A friend of mine found a Dwight Yoakam record in the dollar bin, but he knew (somehow) that it was originally released, with the same artwork, on a different label. He sold it for $300.

Know what I mean? You are less likely to find a $40 record that is actually worth $200. At that point it's probably worth the $40. Pricing like that means they have an idea what's up.

search discogs.com site for the cataog number
and yes if there is a barcode on the cover it could be a reissue (depends if the records came out in the 60s, 70s or 80s...)

If the record is issued in before 80's, then most likely the record jacket is made of thin card board with thin printed paper, grued on the base card board (the process was done by factory workers!)
With newer LP cover jacket, it is printed to the card board directly, thus cheaper to manufacture. (but not always the case, I think Sharon Jones & Dap Kings' vinyl LP was done with old way, they care about details.)
Sun Ra records are not cheap, even reissues. He released tons of records, from SPs to LPs, throughout his career (many of them were released by himself, sold only at his concert.) There is even a book just for Sun Ra discography.

co-sign. anyways, for $40, i can find a seller willing to get rid of anywhere from 100 to 500 records. craigslist. records aren't worth shit. it's like the biggest misconception ever. don't believe that? try selling them.

thanks man, your info helped me discover that this is a reissue. I have thousands of records (most of them purchased for under 5 or 6 bucks) but I never looked into if a record was original or reissue, I just wanted to listen to the music, or sample it haha. Good looks on the catalog number info man.

No bar code on it though

but yeah, I love this record and its def worth more than 40 bucks to me. Most money I ever spent on a record (bought it like 8 years ago maybe) and I guess I got lucky haha. I never listen to records before I buy them, I just love Sun Ra's sounds and the cover was dope so I purchased.

I got lucky because it is an album I really enjoy. To me it is worth more than 40 bucks
