GPE is the fastest way to make programs. using UNDO, you can copy pad parameters from one pad to another very quickly.
the downside is that currently, GPE displays only pad layer 1
to access/edit pad layer 2 and 3, you have to enter LAYER mode by hitting WINDOW over the pad number.

here is my request: in GPE, allow the user to select/view/edit pad layer 2 or 3 for all pads - instead of just pad layer 1.

Example:
1- load 3 samples (sampleA, sampleB, sampleC)
2- chop the 3 samples
3- add the chopped samples to a new PGM: samples chopped from sampleA go in pad layer 1, samples chopped from sampleB go in pad layer 2, samples chopped from sampleC go in pad layer 3.
4- enter GPE. NOTE: pad layer 1 is displayed by default. change TUNE of samples. NOTE: TUNE of pad layer 1 is changed.
5- in GPE, select "edit pad layer 2" (the function that is the requested addition).
6- change tune of samples. NOTE: tune of pad layer 2 is changed.
7- in GPE, select "edit pad layer 3" (the function that is the requested addition).
8- change tune of samples. NOTE: tune of pad layer 3 is changed.
9- in GPE, select "edit pad layer 1" (the function that is the requested addition).
10- view/edit of PAD LAYER returns to 1.

thanks for the support dude i figured you'd be into this.
i often create several copies of the same chopped sample and layer them in the layers...then play with micro loop points
then use qlink layer switch between them for some glitching
it's really fun and easy but the time consuming part kills the inspiration...especially when you have a large number of chops. brings me back to the akai os 2.1 days.

mikolo what OS did you start with on your MPC? i forget how long you've been in the jjos game. it wasn't since the beginning, was it?

I like this request and I feel that pad layering and editing is one of the things that kind of did not work
as well in os2xl.Even in the akai os you could layer pads and edit the layers much faster.

yeah due to gpe the pad layer 1 is really the most important layer
which for a while lead me to just use only that layer and simult everything
but that gets more complicated than it needs to when you're tracking out
and also limits your mute group opportunities

but if layers 2 and 3 are given proper attention in GPE i think that issue will be a thing of the past.

To tell the truth I kind of gave up on simult.I will give it another look.To to be honest it frustrates me.
How do you get a request like this in motion?

i already submitted it. we'll see what happens. they usually get back to me pretty quickly. i have a habit of requesting things that are conceptually easy to implement like this so i hope for the best.

No not from the beginning. I found this place whilst looking to see if akai would be updating 2.1 - which is the OS I started on. I think it was the early 4.1 days of what became known as os1 when i started lurking here.

thanks for asking JJ about this- i was making a layered drum pgm yesterday afternoon and this would of speeded things up somewhat!

+ 1 on this. I end up using simult, but when you have lots going on it gets complicated. my biggest gripe with layer mode is how i get there. i hate having to select pad number, its just slow because im always on some other screen when i decide i need to edit the layer. think of the situation where you are jamming out and say "i need to lower the volume of layer 2 on my kick pad" you have to go into program mode, navigate with arrows bunch of times to get to pad number then hit window. it would be nice to have a direct key.

here are some suggestions/requests to improve access to layer mode:

1.in pgm mode, id like the sample button (f1) to say 'SAMPLYR' instead of 'SAMPLE' and it worked like the 'LFOMUTE' button and it would toggle between layer screen and main pgm screen, that way you dont have to be on the pad number column to get to layer mode.

2. in any screen, add a short cut : shift + 1, shift + 2, shift +3 that would take you directly to current selected pads layer screen with either 1,2,or 3 layer auto selected.

3.in pgm mode main screen, if you had a pad with multiple layers active, there would be an identifier by the sample name. this way you could see in pgm main screen which pad has layers active.

on a side note, this was always my gripe with external pad editors like mpc maid. i whish you could preview layers on those apps and actually hit a pad and play all three layers. that way youcould actually create with them instead of just using them to assign samples. if jjos created pad editor that acted like this, i'd pay for it. basically taking mpc maid and improving on it so you can actually use it as a creative tool instead of just a basic bulk assigner. plus add ability to map midi with it, youd have winning combo.

That's a good idea. Switching quickly from a global edit view to an individual pad view.
