WTF my tv is new fangled and doesnt have rca outs

that is dope, yeah i heard someone say taht i should just bypass my tv, but i didnt know if it would work like that or not. i have tried going direclty from my xbox to the digi inputs of my mpc but it didnt work because the signal is obvously analog coming from the xbox.
this will be a good way to do it though i think. thanks for all the replies guys. helped out alot.

im wondering why no one else does this though, i have never really hear of anyone using anything other than the Y cables to sample from their tv.
maybe i just havent heard of anyone talking about it, or maybe no one is as ocd about it as me
have you guys ever done this? or thought about it?

I sample direct from the tuner built in to my DVD recorder.
The outputs on my TV are dependent on the volume control so I would need to have the volume pretty high to get a decent signal from them.
The DVD puts out a line level signal that works out perfectly.

both the xbox and ps2 have ditigal outs.

oh, well also keep in mind for digital (spdif) you only need 1 cable for stereo... there isn't a separate one for left and right.

i bought two of those rca to 1.4 inch jacks and plugged them directly to the back of my mpc and it worked like a charm!

only weird thing was, even if the rec gain was all the way down it would still pick up signal, i dont know why.

@ beach_break, what are the digital outs on my 360? it has hdmi outputs, but surley i cant sample direclty off of that without some converter. the only other outs that it has are the rca outs; on the old version of the 360 i remember it had a blue green and some other color connected to the red, yellow and white outs, is this what you are talking about?

no offense please but you are missing a very big point...number of cables/plugs does not always equal number of channels.

for example...
1) two rca cords, red and white - those are usually mono each...so two of them together, that's stereo.
2) 'y-cable' two rca to 1/8" or 1/4" : 2 stripes - if the 1/8" end has two black stripes on it, IT IS STEREO. just because it is one plug, it is still stereo
3) 'y-cable' two rca to 1/8" or 1/4" :1 stripe - if the 1/8" end has one black stripe on it, it is MONO on that end. One problem though, this is a TERRIBLE idea....not only will the signals not mix properly, but you could actually damage your gear.
4) one SPDIF rca cable - this is a STEREO cable even though it only has 1 signal wire...because it is simply a digital signal.

you keep talking about it mixing your signals...well that is really bad and you should basically avoid that situation any time you come across it. You are doing that either one of two ways:
1) using a stereo plug in a mono jack (like the inputs on your mpc)
2) using a mono plug on a stereo jack (like the headphone out of any device)

and no matter what you plug into what, a digital signal will never ever work in an analog input/output unless there is some sort of conversion going on, either via a box or an internal codec.

i hope this clears up some of your confusion. once you get the proper understanding of this you will instantly be able to decide if plugging something into something else will work...no guessing needed.

^^^ yeah i know about the trs and ts sleeves being stereo and mono respectively, it was just the conversion that i thought was having some confusion on because one channel on the mpc isnt going to give me stereo. before i posted this; thought it was a kind of psudeo-stereo thing when i plugged my stereo send cable into my mono receive mpc jack; but this thread cleared that up for me.

i guess what i was wondering is why does everyone use a rca to stereo 1/4 inch to plug into thier mono in on the mpc.
i had been doing this for awhile; albeit along time ago, but this is just what i thought was the only way you could sample from your tv.

and konc3pt, thanks for clearing that up for me too, ill have to go look at those cords today. i was looking at the back of my xbox last night like no way does this have a digital out on it; but i didnt even think to look at that cord.
