Voodoo's MPC3000

Hey all.

I recently copped my first MPC3000! (Swapped an XL for it) Just thought I could start a thread to ask all my questions







The old girl's in ok shape but has definitely got a few known issues.

Scsi fuse needs replacing.

Jog wheel is Jacked (kinda works but super loose, flops around).

Some tact switches on the way out.

Infamous whine from headphone jack.

So I ordered the Valixi OS from Rohan Yesterday. Ordering Scsi fuse and tact switches today.

I'm not sure about the Jog Wheel, couldn't find any answers in my search, will have a look when I install OS. If anyone has some knowledge please share?

Want to order scsi Card reader today but a bit dubious about having non hot swap as they seem to be only ones available.
Does anyone have a workaround for this? I'm guessing you can use an mpc editor? but I try to work in the box completely.

If anyone has a suggestion on a card reader from JD that they have had success with please let me know.

I've searched for all things I mentioned here and figured most of it without an mpc3000 bible, but if you could tell me where it is I'll take a look cause I can only see one one for the 60.

About the jog wheel, just pull it off and find a replacement that will fit.

Hopefully the spindle/ threading isn't too worn.

JD's card-readers are solid, hot-swap isn't a necessity really.

Thanks Clint, I,ve always wanted to try out a 3000 or 60, I know the 200XL inside out so it's kinda weird slowing down my workflow (damn near took me 3 hours to chop some samples the other day) but I think it's worth it for the warmth in sound and feel of the sequencer. The new OS and some practice should hopefully speed me up a bit.

Yeah it feels like the whole terminal has broken away from the board or whatever, but as I say will have a look in a few days when I open her up.

I have seen the thread w the guy who had modded his s900? These are an ok option, but 1.4 partitions and floppy speed? I think I'll go with a non hotswap CF drive and make that work.

Thanks for your feedback. I realize you don't want everyone to start a thread for there machine, but I thought it could save Individual threads and hijacks in the longrun.

Jog wheels get loose often. They don't have any Loctite on them. Pop it open and see if that's the problem, could be a simple tightening of the bolts.

If you're after a new knob cosmetically, the S3000 or 3000xl is the way to go. I know a spot that has a complete S3000 for like $125.

I have a spare knob and encoder from one just in case mine goes, but so far so good. Some things on the S3000 like the volume and record pots will work, but are different. I put a new one in a 3000 I repaired and sold and it was super sensitive, and super loud. Like a minor turn of the knob put the volume in the red. The buyer (a poster on here) didn't mind as I think he used a mixer anyway. Just a heads up that the same parts on different machines may have their quirks.

Purchased a replacement jog wheel encoder for my 3000 a while ago from someone on this site.
His username is/was renato_rizoli - hopefully he's still around.
Item was dispatced quickly and he was very communicative and helpful. I've not picked up the soldering iron to install the part yet but the encoder looks absolutely fine.
Would not hesitate to purchase from him again.
Can't access it from work to see if its still active - but his site was at http://myworld.ebay.fr/renato_rizoli

Yeah the 1.44 mb partitions is a limitation, thats because the device is an EMULATOR.

You can put as many partitions as you like on a single CF card, but who has samples that size these days apart from drum hits...

FWIW I use a SCSIFORSAMPLERS external CF drive with my 3000 and occasionally the floppy drive.

Yeah I'm gonna go with a CF reader from JD. Just wishing I could afford a duel reader or reader/hard drive option.

Might look into an emulator for my EMAX 11.


Damn I gotta replace these tact switches asap. Driving me nuts hammering these buttons.

Also just remembered the no.4 out on this girl not working either. Time to do some more research.

Trying to find a desoldering iron like the one you have and not having much luck.

You don't need a de-soldering iron. A solder sucker or braid will do the job.

You don't need a de-soldering iron. Just use a regular soldering iron and a copper wick. As you heat the solder with the iron, use the copper wick to absorb the solder.

From watching these videos, I just removed my first tact switch. It was easy to do. I am taking the tact switch into town tomorrow to find a dealer. All these companies that sell MPC parts are ripping people off. You can but over 100 tact switches for the same price they sell a single tact switch. In the words of Kanye..."I'm so appalled!" lol
