Does anyone use halion one in Cubase 5 as a sound module with the mpc2000 classic? I know it can be done but my man is having a problem with it. MIDI connections are all correct. he can record 1 instance of halion (I know its not multi-timbral) just fine but when he tries to record the 2nd instance of halion, that track plays the the pattern of the first track with the second track sounds.

Can someone please tell us what we are doin wrong.

That does sound weird. I don't use Cubase but I've been in a similar situation in Sonar just like this and what I ended up doing was bouncing the first track to audio track...erase the midi clip and record the new clip for the new patch. ....if worst comes to worst I would recommend doing it this way. :D

thank you. but that would defeat the purpose of composing on the mpc. I understand your method. we would lose so much creativity that way.

You may have the physical connections right, but without trying to state the obvious, there must be a midi connection issue within Cubase or maybe the MP.

I'll have a look later if I get chance.

How would you lose creativity? I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

Thanks. we are going crazy over this.

because he wants to compose completely on the mpc and then track into cubase. he wants to use halion one as a sound module just like i use reason as a sound module to the mpc. taking time to go back and forth recording on the mpc then record on cubase, loses time. like i said, i do understand where you are coming from and that would be good to do if he was using the mpc as a trigger and composing in cubase.

As far as I understand you want to be able to use the MPC as sequencer and cubase with halion as a sound modul with different sounds.
I dont know halion but to use different patches on it you will need to use different MIDI channels. You already said that halion isn't multitimbral so the only way I can imagine how it will work is to create some tracks in cubase and open up an instance of halion in every track. Then set each track to a different MIDI-channel. On the 2000 you'll need to change the MIDI channels on the tracks too.
If that didn't help cubase 5 havn't change its behaviour since cubase 3 and you'll need to implement a "pass only on one MIDI channel" on every track.

To do this you have to open the input transform window on each track (an arrow in the inspector window). Press it, select local and choose CHANNEL FILTER from the presets. Dont forget to activate the modul.
Do these steps for every track. The MIDI channel the track is set to have to be the channel that need to be set as passthru in the input transform window of this track.

You also have to activate the monitor (small speaker symbol) on every track.

Sorry cant explain it better. I hope you understand what I mean :)

@petterpipper - the funny thing is that is exactly what we did. but that didn't seem to work. unless we are doing something completely wrong. here's what we have:

mpc: Track 1 set to midi 1A
cubase: Halion One set as a midi track, in 'input transform' local set to pass channel 1
midi channel 1 selected in the channel field in the inspector.

the same setup for track 2 and so on...

and it still behaves like I mentioned above.

but from your explanation, it seems like we are on the right track (no pun intended)

This is why I suggested to record the first track Halion to an audio track...this way you keep the original feel from the mpc but then you can erase the MIDI track in the mpc and repeat this process for each instance of Halion. It sounds like something in Halion isn't set up properly...its not receiving the correct MIDI channel. As it stands now you aren't making any progress at least if you do it the way I'm explaining you can make some progress....I'm just sayin'.

You're track doesn't have to be sequenced in Cubase to get the audio from the instance of
Halion that you're working with.

I just tried it with cubase 3, a vst synth and LM7(cubase drums) and my MPC2000 and it worked. I sequenced the LM7 to a Track (set to 1A) on the 2000 and the Synth on another Track (set to 2A). Both playing and I can mute or solo them on the MPC.
So yes, you are on the right track. I guess its just a lil erreor in the settings. Something like the "activate" checkmark of the input transformer, or a wrong MIDI channel.
Check again:

Cubase settings:

Track 1 :
Monitor symbol activated
MIDI Channel: 1
MIDI out : FIRST instance of Halion
Input transform: local, Preset ChannelFilter CHANNEL 1, Activate checkmark on Modul 1

Track 2 :
Monitor symbol activated
MIDI channel: 2
MIDI out : SECOND instance of Halion
Input transform: local, Preset ChannelFilter CHANNEL 2, Activate checkmark on Modul 2

MPC settings
Track 1
MIDI: 1A

Track 2
MIDI: 2A

2 more questions:

1. What interface do you use for the MIDI connection?
2. Have you also a connection from the Interface MIDI OUT to the MPC MIDI IN? (In case you have you'll probably have to set the MIDI THRU on the MPC to OFF (move the cursor to 1A hit OPEN WINDOW and set THRU to OFF)

that's exactly what we want to do. so when you are playing the second instance, it doesn't play the first instance pattern?

No pattern 2 is only playing the synth (MIDI track2 in cubase)
But as I said before, I use Cubase 3 and havn't any experience with Cubase 5. I dont know what kind of other settings are in there. It also could be something at the project or program settings.

Follow peterpiper’ Instructions Accurately 8)

Well I’ve been on the wagon for 14 months now and I need as much natural euphoria as I can get!! and this post with peterpiper’s advice has given me just that

I have (or rather had) been trying to get the MPC5000 to work multimbarly with cubase studio 4 and Halion Presets since summer 2009.

I e-mailed akai help, and posted my concerns on cubase forum’s, no help…I changed my MIDI leads, I had shares in Smirinoff and Red Bull, but I still had the problems that sparq describes so succinctly.

Occasionaly I would dable with other ideas, eg a MIDI 2X2 Interface. To try and separate MIDI tracks that way, but would alas end up where I started.

I lost my confidence with the Technology because in essence this should have been an easy process to accomplish……..ie combine breaks and drums with some great sounding pseudo acoustic instruments.

It has been restored.

Thank you. (I know this is a MPC200 Forum, but I would like it to go here)
