zip drive troubles, disk read error, samples not loading etc

so ive lost about 3 masterpieces that i must start from scratch. im not gonna blab about my mishaps, but just kind of sick of starting from scratch these days.

when i load ALL_PGMs it starts out fine, loads what it should but then stops in the middle of a sound and my MPC just freezes. i know this because the zip drive stops making noise. you know that "loading" noise. only once i heard the clicking and im pretty sure thats a disk error. is this my zip drive? my RAM? lousy connection from my zip to MPC?? its an internal drive that i installed myself. anyone have any input on this? im scared to put another disk in my drive because i might lose another beat! help!

If the zip drive starts that clicking sound, I would not use it again because it can damage the disks. I would suggest you start by trying a new zip drive and if you get one that works, let this be a general warning about zip drives - get yourself a card reader drive.

Or maybe you should get a USB zip drive, hook it up to your computer and copy all your stuff to your hard drive. At least then, you'll have it backed up and you can make a decision about which drive to continue using with the immediate pressure off.

thanks. from what ive read on the forums the clicking sound means your disk is gone. i have a USB ZIP drive, but most of my disks are MPC formatted and if mount a ZIP disk on my desktop once its back in the MPC some of the sound and sequence files are bugged. this must have to do with it being MAC.

ive tried to use one of the clicking disks in USB drive and it almost got stuck. so veto that idea. im totally in the market of buying a card reader. this is my dilemma - getting all my beats/sounds/data off my zip disks and onto a simm/cf card of some sort. does anyone know of a service that does this? i would try to do with my USB ZIP drive, but im pretty sure that will screw with some of my beats.

the only way i can think around this is buying an external zip drive and an internal cf reader... which is $$$ these days...

i got a CF reader from JD, but before i install the drive im still in the process of transferring my sounds to my computer. still wondering if anyone knows about "finder files" on mac how i can avoid them corrupting my MPC data on zip disks.

yeah i know its the same person. JD is really cool and incredibly helpful. thnx for the heads up. no access to an old PC here. right now in the MPC im renaming all of the sounds and PGM names max of 8 characters or less. thats seems to be working when tranfering between usb zip and my internal in my akai. i know i shouldnt change any names when on my computer or the MPC wont be able to find that changed sound. alot of busy work ahead
