Is it possible to use my midi interface as a midi patchbay? I have a Motu midi express 128 I have it all working good on my computer. I have 1 in and out attached to the in and out on my mpc. I have midi ox on my computer. Does anyone know how to set this up on midi ox or another program that you use it successfully. I would basically just like to be able to controller my many synths from my mpc and sequence them with my mpc without plugging and unplugging midi cables every time. I have a mpc 2500 with jj os xl. I also have ableton suite 8 maybe It can be done in there as well. thanks for the help.

single midi in and out port is all you need for the mpc, then you can further expand your midi devices by connecting them to the mpc which is connected to your pc if that makes sense

If I understand you correctly, you don't need a computer or patchbay to do this.

You simply assign each instrument to receive on a unique midi channel, then set MPC tracks to each midi channel to control it.

The cables would go, MPC MIDI OUT -> SYNTH1 MIDI IN
SYNTH1 MIDI THRU -> SYNTH2 MIDI IN
SYNTH2 MIDI THRU -> SYNTH3 MIDI IN
etc, etc, etc...

You just use the midi 'thru' to pass the same signal sent from the mpc onto each next machine in the chain.

If your synths are configured properly, they will only respond to whichever specific midi channel you set.
So you can choose which synth to control in the mpc simply by changing a tracks output midi channel.

Hey whats up I understand how to daisy chain midi gear together but im not trying to do that. what im trying to do is,


I already have midi ins and outs connected from all my midi gear to my midi interface which has 9 ins and outs. 1 of those ins and outs goes to the mpc. I want to know how to control my synths from my mpc while incorparating the midi interface because I like to do some in the box midi stuff too in ableton. I like How I have it in ableton I can control the synths from in there. Its just I want to do the same thing but with the mpc similar on how I do the routings in ableton if that is possible, Like lets say Midi out 7 to midi in 2. Is there a way to do that without daisy chaining. I could of saved some money and got a 1x1 midi interface and daisy chained. but I figure theres got to be a way of basically using it like a patchbay. please any help is good thanks

I don't really understand why you keep saying you need a patchbay? Could you explain more 'in the box midi stuff too in ableton'?

To re-route (aka 'patch') something in the daisy-chained set up, all you have to do is change midi channel numbers. The way I see it, an mpc hooked up to many synths via daisy-chaining can basically replicate in midi what ableton can do with clips.

I guess I don't see why you think you are benefiting from the multiple midi ins/outs. I think you will benefit in terms of very very minute latency, but as far as routing/patching goes, you can do all that within the mpc.

Or are you saying, sometimes you want the mpc to control the synths, and sometimes you want ableton to control the synths? If that's the case, you want to be able to switch on the fly, then yea you will need some sort of midi merger/spiltter tool (software or hardware).

Can I also ask, why do you have every instrument hooked up on it's own midi port? What is the benefit to you? Are all your synths using multiple midi channels?

It sounds like a crazy advanced midi rig and im very interested, thats why I ask.

Id get a M Audio Uno, connect it to your MPC and the use the other I/O on the MPC to daisy chain gear, a la the method Noggin J mentioned.

There is no benefit to having 18 MIDI cables connected to an interface, unless you want to leave a bunch of keyboards/synths turned off some of the time.

Sounds like the most expensive and complicated way to do things, imo.

Why would I get a m audio uno when I have a motu midi express 128?

I dont want to daisy chain

So why do you need each individual unit to connect via MIDI I/O to your comp?

You dont, daisy chaining is HOW YOU USE MIDI. Unless each unit is multitimbral with 16 MIDI channels on each device, and you are sequencing 128+ tracks at once, there is no need to be running everything into you computer individually. The only other benefit, as I said before, is if you only want to have some of your MIDI devices turned off in the daisy chain.

Not trying to be condescending, MIDI is a standard and every device implements it in a different way. It can be confusing. The MIDI Manual and your user manuals must be read, especially with the complicated setup you are trying to run.

Also, the MOTU, imo, is really excessive. I recommended the M Audio, because you could sell the MOTU, buy the M Audio, and have about $200 to spend on something else. Ive been doing this a long time, the one thing Ive learned is, NEVER SPEND MORE ON GEAR THAN YOU HAVE TO... If you look at the audio market now, there arent too many manufacturers (if any) making crazy 20 port MIDI I/O boxes like there were 10 years ago, and there is a very good reason for that...


If you list your gear, I can draw you a simple diagram of how I would set it up. But Im almost 100% (+/- 1%) that you are trying to do something that will just be confusing to setup and use, and cost you 5x as much as you need to spend..
