if anybody wants to take time out to help me, much appreciated...
i got an external usb zip to my comp (windows) and i got another external zip to my mpc2kxl.......i tried to export a pgm to a disk from my comp using the editor, then tried to load it to the mpc, but where it says TYPE there are a bunch of question marks.. whereas before, it would always say either a,b, or c. so...what do i need to do so that the zip hooked up to the mpc will read it? and also, can somebody tell me step by step how to load and/or save a sound and/or programs from the editor to the usb zip so that when i put it in the other zip hooked up to the mpc, i can load the sounds properly....... thanks all

I have a MPC3000, I use the MAc version of this software: MPCPGMMaker.
I always take the snd files and pgm files out of the folder before I save them to a Zip disk. Also, do not use the same disk that you save all of your MPC songs and sounds on in your PC. Use another Zip disk to transfer sounds rom the MPC to the PC.

The XL can read WAV files, so you don't have to use the program unless you really wanna set up MPC Programs in your PC.

beetjunkeeee - Which you have to do is make sure your Zip disk is PC formated. Remember the MP can read both PC or MPC formats but the PC can only read PC format. I'm using the same hookup as you except I installed a zip into my MP and everthing works fine. Let me know if this helps.

Tread carefully here. many people have reported problems with formatting zipdisks with an NTFS partition.
I never got my zipdisk to work if i format them with my pc, cause windows xp is on a NTFS partion. If you're using FAT you should have no problem.

Wrong.
Format the ZIP on PC using FAT or FAT16.
MPC and PC will be able to read/write that ZIP disk after that.
Use "8 character" filenames only, ie. "kickdrum.wav" 12345678.123 format.

so what is fat, fat16 and how do i get it? is it free?

FAT stands for File Allocation Table its how and where the computer (or mpc) allocates the files it saves onto your harddrive or zip disk or whatever. windows XP uses NTFS which is like a new FAT so its not compatible with the MPC coz theyre old (obviously) so to be able to transfer files from a pc formatted disk to your mpc you need to be running windows 95 98 98se

edit* i think when you format a disk on the computer you can choose either FAT or NTFS

so how do i format my disks? what exactly do i do? i have win98

As long as the disks involved are formatted as Fat16 or even 32, the operating system is fine. XP will do just fine for formatting and recognising
disks used with an MPC

XP has the option of NTFS or FAT formatting

Insert your Zip/Floppy into the drive, double click 'My Computer' > right click the disk drive I.E A:/ > scroll down to FORMAT, and format as FAT
(NOT NTFS!!!!!)

Normally the XL can read Win9x formatted disks. I suspect there may be some other problem.

Just to make sure, format on the PC and try again. If that does not work, try formatting on the MPC, and try again.

If those still do not work, then use the free Iomega's disk tools to format the drive on the PC. If you still have problems after this, there is likely something else wrong. As a last resort, you could use the Format Utility from the MPCEditor and format a spare disk for transfeers.

ok i formated one disk on my comp, with the FAT option, then i loaded a pgm into the mpc from another disk that already had sounds on it, then i put the freshly formatted disk into the zip connected to the mpc, and tried to save the pgm to see if it would work and it says 'disk read error' any help?

just to see, i took a disk (with soundsz) that i had and it works fine with my zip that is hooked to the mpc, i put it in my new zip thats hooked to my comp and tried to open it to see the sounds, and when i clicked 'open', it said 'please insert a disk'. so my new zip is not recognizing disks that i already had with sounds on it.....what is the deal....this is wack
