lighter 200xl

im trying to get my 2000xl to be a little lighter to carry around , any ideas? Im going to pull it to pieces and see if any parts can be exchanged or removed for lighter ones?

I had 2 of 'em opened on my coffee table the other day and would say probably not. It's the base and frame where most of the weight is . I swapped in a CF for the zip and I doubt that took more than 3 ozs. off the weight. You'd likely have to have a custom made high impact plastic case and frame (like an older dell) to do what you're saying, and where would you get that? Wait I'm looking at you name, why don't you just take a 1000 mobile?

Considering the 2KXL is built like a tank, that'll be the 5000 then.

i had a 1000 with jj os and sold it for a 2000xl ..to me it sounds smooth when pitched up or down. the 1000 was too bright and I could hear the difference. Timing wasnt a big deal but the sound quality is just obvious to me. I assume the 500 and 5000 are the same since all the processing is done mostly in software, where as the older machines actually have more resistors and diodes so there is more circuitry doing the work. I could be wrong since I know the chip on the 2000xl does work too but the sound difference is there.


maybe a fibreglass case is the way, just need to mold from the existing case. I do like the fact that its solid, but its too heavy and impractical in the sense, unnecessary weight especially if you have to fly with it.

Yea I think you might be very wrong about this.
You understand a sampler is digital, right? That means all the processing is done in software. Sure there are different Analog->Digital and vice versa conversions going on, but for things like 'pitching' as you said, filtering, etc,.... all of that is done in software.
True though, the algorithms (the math) that is taking place in the older machines is likely different, but please don't go around thinking an mpc 2kxl is more 'analog' than a 1k.

Also I like how you tried to make your 2000xl lighter by removing a 0 in the subject. ;]

On topic, I'd have to agree, I think the bulk of the weight comes from the chassis/casing, and there are not many parts that the mpc can function without, so you'd have to get really creative/clever if you were trying to lighten it up.

1) Are you absolutely 100% sticking with your 2000xl for all your production?

2) Are you really traveling with your mpc enough to warrant having a fiberglass case made?

fiberglass is heavy, not light.... aluminum may be a possible alternative though...

just start working out instead... lift some weights and your MPC will seem lighter in time...

just drill a bunch of holes in the case bottom.


remove all the components, then drill 1/2 inch holes, every where you can
remove the plastic front piece.



or, just be tough as nails and carry that machine as is.

Orrrrrrrr you could get a ipad and load up some kind of musical software app thingamajig
