Guiness, that's exactly what made a tipping point for me to want an SP1200. I wouldn't use it much, maybe on a couple of tracks, or on samples.

Go with the SP, but understand it's a total different ball game and there is a learning curve to it. The workflow is much different if you are used to an MPC. I got the 1200 but even got an MPC 60 and found it difficult at first.

You might want to consider an MPC 60. They are real nice too.

I don't use my SP1200 much, but when I do use it, it brings a lot of enjoyment. Unless you was brought up on the SP1200 you are not going to use it day in day out. It's a piece of history that you can say you own, and use.

I got ripped off on mine, it came broke. So after paying for it to be repaired it cost me £2000 in total. That's for the 1998 re-issue.

if you are used to MPC pads, you will probably think the "drum pads" feel like schit... you really have to BANG them... but other than that it is a very fun and intuitive machine...

Well someone beat me to the SP1200. So I got the Motif XS6. It is like an orgy with the pageant finalists.
It's working out real good for me and gives me a good reason to get fluent with the keys and the sounds are night and day vs Reason, or VSTi gimmicks.
I will still be on the lookout for an SP1200 though..
The Sp was going for 1100, and this was the black reissue. Steal.

LMAO, The motif was the midget whore, ....You could multisample a motif to get the "motif sound", but you cant get the motif to sound like the sp.


Shoulda gripped the SP the min you found out it was for sale.

i would get the motif...i love the synths and rhodes but at the same time, the sp sounds are crunchy and grimey lol

yea, i got to have both. Dirty drums and bass lines, with motif rhodes, is what i am after.

i've never used a motif, but the sp-1200 is a legendary drum machine
i love my vinyl samples coming out of that crazy analog filters,
plus the sound is so raw (26.04 kHz sampling rate 12-bit resolution)
i've copped mine in 2008, the unit was in perfect condition (near mint), but some of the white and red buttons and some of the black drum pads are a bit sticky
i'm using it with my mpc2000 (not xl) and a foot switch
