computer + reaper + decent 2 channel audio interface w/midi
remember, its an investment and sucks having to replace gear cause you cheaped out.
since its your first DAW setup.....your gonna learn alot.
what you dont want to have to replace is laptop. get a good laptop. what you may eventually need to replace is the audio interface (depends on your needs for outs and quality)
pick good software and stick with it. i like reaper, but there are slew out there, depends on what you want to spend and your future goals with the DAW.
for me, im a record and mix with my DAW guy. i dont really get into using it for composing (although i have, its not part of my current workflow), whereas other guys integrate the DAW into the creative process as well, using it as a sound module, recording, sequencing, etc. that may effect what software you go with, although nowadays they are all pretty flexible.
the tascam sounds like fun tho, but prob isnt the future proof approach. it will be simple, fun, but wont grow withyour needs like a laptop can.
