Fxpansion GEIST ..........Mpc and Maschine killa

Looks cool....but I still don't think I'd prefer this over the Reason/Recycle/Record combo that I'm working with right now. At only 249.99 USD I think this is a decent contender against Motu BPM.....at it's price point it's definitely a winner.

how much was geist????

check out ni kore players for free man, you can upgrade to elements for fairly cheap too. not sure id go all the way with komplete, tis a lot of cheddar

I have BPM as well as Geist, and Geist definitely comes out on top. You can't even turn off the grid in BPM. The BPM interface is prettier but what does that matter? From a flow and function standpoint Geist's GUI is far superior. I will say the UVI/Universal Sounbank/MOTU sounds are fantastic as they are all 24bit/96khz recordings, very crispy. I just wanted a front end to access those sounds as they are in a proprietary format.

But Cosmic Pimp is on the money here, the editing/sound shaping on Geist is stellar and I'm sure most people here would prefer to dial in their own crisp sound (or the opposite ) as opposed to BPM's instant gratification. FXpansion had the DCAM guys do the Geist FX and within that they ported DCAM's lovely filters straight into Geist.

I couldn't agree with you more. I too own BPM and I'm actually quite frustrated with Motu because they don't allow the 19GB of sounds outside of BPM....I think this is ridiculous! I have the first version of BPM and their slow and very lacking updates are another complaint I have....the first version doesn't even have an 'undo' feature...and they didn't add undo until 1.5. My whole Bpm experience has left a very sour taste in my mouth towards Motu. I really wish there was a way to get the sounds from BPM and use them in other applications (without bouncing everything out one sound at a time)

Geist looks like a better program than BPM as far as a drum machine/sampler but not forgetting that BPM has a synth engine which may be a plus to some. I think Geist is in a pretty small niche has a standalone software sampler/drum machine....looks like it could turn out to be a strong contender though....like you mentioned another thing BPM has going for it is it's incredible sound library but as for the first release of BPM, it was definitely half baked.

Man geist is **** the best thing ever.I have done a 8 bar drum loop fully processed and sounds **** mint in under a hour and this is without using a manual

the Eqs are **** ace the compressor envelope shaper on the snare is a revelation.

Upright it seems how we feel about BPM is pretty much the consensus. Last year just by coincidence Saintjoe and I bought BPM on the same day. We did a lot of back and forth discussing the product and same as you were just kind of scratching our heads at some of the design decisions. It was odd how some features are very well thought out while other (rather basic) features are either missing or implemented poorly. I have the 1.5 update and it really only takes it from half-baked to 3/4 baked at best. I hear you on the soundbanks, not even Extreme Sample Convertor or ChickSys can liberate those great sounds. I might start doing what I do with stuff like d16 Nepheton and just put a bunch of bars in a DAW, program some sounds with enough space between for the decay. Then slice the hits and trim the gaps in Recycle. I think my 4k would love to meet those sounds in their full resolution internally as opposed to triggering, I'm thinking 4k's dope modulation features here.

Back on topic I'm glad Cosmic started this thread I definitely needed a reminder of how dope Geist is even though I bought it the day of it's release.

Time for bed i think its nearly 3 am and i'm goosed been making loops in Geist man that shit rocks ,and the limitiations like count in and not know ing how to turn quantize off actually help you ten fold.

most of the apps out these days get the job done its all personal choice but if it takes an hour to make a drum loop that aint cool.

in a few minutes u can bang out shit on maschine peeps under estimate the value of having hands on control for ur software to where u forget ur using software that shit is golden and puts maschine above bpm and giest until those developers find away to mimic the maschine way of working nothing is **** with it

I think you have a good point here, there's something really nice about having everything right there on the controller I can see how that would definitely speed up workflow and keep the creative juices flowing...for me using a mouse and looking at the computer screen isn't that big of a creativity killer....I guess I'm use to it now.

you don't like using ableton's slice to midi feat and drum rack? you can create your own slicing presets and save them for when you use slice to midi. i set one up so it slices and sets all my volumes to 0 with the release all the way up (this one i use when chopping up breaks) and i set one up so it slices and sets all my volumes to 0, the release all the way up and all my slices to choke group 1 (this is good for chopping up samples and having the pads cut each other off)

i also just found out that with drum rack, after your done your beat, you can drag each chain out of drum rack and it will create a new midi track with all your midi info and just the one sound. so you can have all your drum rack sounds separate if you want to stem out your beat. i use to duplicate drum rack, then mute all but one sound to have each sound separate on a bounce. this way of dragging each chain out it way easier!

drum rack and sampler in ableton are real nice, once you get the hang of working with them.

I was using multiple instances of impulse routed to a drum bus but man i could never go back to that after using this software ,It is that good
