MPC5000 reviews, bug reports and fellow user support on the most recent standalone, hardware MPC from Akai

Hey,

I have the MPC 5000 & I am having trouble setting up MIDI. I have (3) keyboards / synths that I am trying to slave to the MPC...

1. Roland - Fantom G6
2. Access - Virus TI2
3. Moog - MiniMoog Voyager

In the past I just had the Fantom & Virus, which I connected successfully like...

MPC "MIDI Out A" - Fantom "MIDI In"
Fantom "MIDI Out" - MPC "MIDI In 1"

MPC "MIDI Out B" - Virus "MIDI In"
Virus "MIDI Out" - MPC "MIDI In 2"

What is confusing me is the MPC 5000 only has (2) MIDI Ins & (4) MIDI Outs.

I believe I am suppose to hook up my (3) keys / synths as such...

1. MPC MIDI Out A - Fantom In
2. MPC MIDI Out B - Virus In
3. MPC MIDI Out C - Moog In

When doing this I can hear the keys / synths playing on the MPC pads, but when I record a key / synth's MIDI data to the MPC it will not play back. How do I hook up the keys / synths MIDI In's with (3) keys / synths but only (2) MPC MIDI In's?

Do I need another piece of equipment to give me more MPC MIDI Ins?

Is there a way of doing this where all (3) keys / synths will be able to utilize each of the MPC's 16 channels of MIDI Outs? For example...

1. Roland Fantom G6 - MPC MIDI "A" - 16 Channels
2. Access Virus - MPC MIDI "B" - 16 Channels
3. Moog MiniMoog Voyager - MPC MIDI 'C" - 16 Channels

Thanks in advance!

Its kinda hard to keep all that straight without seeing it, but from what I gather, why not do this -

Moog -
mpc out - moog in
moog out - mpc in A

Fantom -

mpc out - fantom in
fantom in - mpc in B

Virus -

mpc out - virus in

The virus is a desktop, not a keyboard, right?

The reason the mpc isnt sequencing any of the keys youre playing on the keyboard is because you arent telling it too through midi since you dont have any of your keyboards plugged in to the IN port on the mpcs. You need to send the key notes OUT from the keyboard, IN to the mpc, so the mpc sequencer can send it OUT to the same keyboard.

That's a nice setup you have...... I'm  with envy over the Moog you got!
I believe the post above is correct on how you will have to set it up. Read thru chapter 18 in the book and it will show you exactly how you need to set it up.
( I don't own any keyboards so I haven't had to do this yet.)

Thanks for the replies!

I have tried doing what "Manji" suggested in the past, but that leaves the Virus from sending its MIDI to the MPC. By the way, the Virus I am using is the keyboard. So by doing it the way he suggested...

MPC MIDI Out - Moog MIDI In, Moog MIDI Out - MPC MIDI In.
MPC MIDI Out - Fantom MIDI In, Fantom MIDI Out - MPC MIDI In.
MPC MIDI Out - Virus MIDI In, (but no more inputs on the MPC to return Virus MIDI Out)

I can record the MIDI data triggered from the Fantom & Moog to the MPC, but cannot record the MIDI data triggered from the Virus. I have checked the manual & didn't see this addressed, does anyone know how to get this?

Thanks,
Chad

To me the solution is simple.

Yes you only have two midi inputs and four midi outputs.

1. Use a single 'master' keyboard to input notes to the MPC, you don't need all your synths to input note data. The second midi input can also be used for note input duties if no midi sync input is required.

2. If you run out of midi outputs for your gear, start daisychaining your external gear to maximise the midi outputs.

I use a Moog Slim Phatty, Roland XV 3080, DSI mopho & computer soft synths all controlled via the MPC and keys played via mpk49

MPK49 is in MPC 5k Midi In 1 so it controls anything that the tracks channel is set to on the mpc.

since slim and mopho are monophonic 1 channel animals I connect them both to MPC 5k's Midi out A.

mpc 5k midi out A to Slim Phatty midi in
Slim Phatty thru to mopho midi in
Slim is set to channel 1 and mopho is set to channel 2

on MPC if I want to sequence sound from slim I change the track to channel 1A. if I want to sequence sound from mopho i set the track to channel 2A.

Roland XV 3080 Midi IN is connect to mpc 5k midi out B
on MPC if I want to sequence sounds from XV I change the track to channel 1B thru 16B depending on what channel my chosen sound is set to on the XV.

(Soft Synths) RME Fireface 400 Midi IN is connect to mpc 5k midi out C
on MPC if I want to sequence sounds from a Soft Synth I change the track to channel 1C thru 16C depending on what channel my chosen soft synth sounds are set to on the computer (via Logic, Reason whatever).

In this set up I can still have another synth on mpc 5k midi out D. Or if it's another monosynth I can turn the Mopho's midi out to midi thru and set it to channel 3....

OK so this is funny... been rearranging my set up added a couple things since this post and I had to refer back to this post (via google) to reference how i had my own set up put together.
:Sigh:

anyway I'm glad i made good notes here lol
