Hi,

I'm relatively new to the world of hardware sequencers/samplers and looking for advice as to how best to achieve the following:

I play with a live band and our drummer plays to a click out of MPC 1000 running the latest version of JJ OS.

I currently chop up my loops in recycle and use it to generate a midi file that can trigger the individual segments at the correct time time. My goal is to have a hardware solution a bit live Ableton Live, whereby I can launch a (say) 8 bar sequence, loop it for as long as I want, then launch a 1 bar fill, then launch a 4-bar sequence and loop it for as long as I want, etc... At the same time it would be cool (although not essential) to have a different 1-bar loop going continuously throughout the duration of the song.

Is this possible with the MPC?

I can't see an easy way to have the MPC behave like Ableton whereby I can launch clips, loop for as long as I want then launch another clip. I seem to be tied to set song structures with the MPC at the moment.

Is what I want to achieve possible with the MPC 1000?

Keen to hear any suggestions from people that are using the MPC in a similar way. No way am I going back to Ableton for live performance, I've found it to be unreliable at gigs.

do u want the mpc to make these cues on its own or is there someone to cue them

if there is someone to cue u could just make separate sequences and go to the one u need when u need to
that sequence will loop until you change it

if u want it to do it on its own you could just program the song
i'm guessing you want it to loop indefinitely because these sections are open to jam on?
if that's the case then i dont see why you couldnt

"At the same time it would be cool (although not essential) to have a different 1-bar loop going continuously throughout the duration of the song."
--u could achieve this with the simultaneous sequence if u have jjos

i hope i helped

two ways to do this:
1) the multi sequence way - create different sequences, one for each scenario you describe. change sequences when you want to. you can maybe use the pad-sequence function...if jj os has that...i can do this on my 2kxl.

2) the one sequence way - create all your sections in one sequence, just use different tracks. since your longest section is 8 bars, make the sequence 8 bars long. then make the other sections, and just copy/paste them so they too are 8 bars...even if it's just 1 bar looping. now, you can use the track mutes to add/remove 'sections' just like clips in ableton; all in sync. chop your recycled loops into small chunks, and sequence those. the smaller the chunks are, the more you can remix it later.
The thing to keep in mind is organising, naming tracks, and remembering where everything is in the tracks. this is the way i would do it.

ive said it before, i think an mpc with proper sample + midi setup is basically a hardware ableton clip view.

the mpc is an amazing sequencer first and foremost and it really works good for this type of thing.
